Please help, I am trying to find the marriage of John Butt & Elizabeth Bullen, it's probably a big ask as I have no idea when or where the marriage took place.
John Butt was born c 1816 in Wiltshire (Either Ansty or Oliver's Distance?, could this be Alvedistan??) Elizabeth Bullen was bap on 03-Mar-1814 at St Marys Church, Putney. They had a daughter christened Elizabeth Butt, born on 29-Oct-1846 at North Place, Putney- the birth certificates states that the father John Butt was a soldier.
In the 1841 & 1851 census Elizabeth Bullen is single and living with her parents in Putney, although in the 1851 census daughter Elizabeth is with her - both are stated as surname Bullen.
I can't find John Butt in the 1841 census (it may coincide with his army service?) but I have a possible for him in 1851 - noted as married and living with his parents and brothers in Ansty.
I have searched for a marriage post 1837 with no luck but they could have married pre 1837. i've had no luck on the IGI. I have also searched for John's military service on Find my past but again have found nothing
I would be very grateful for any information or suggestions, many thanks
Barbara

Thanks Rebecca
I don't think they are, it looks like John & Elizabeth only had the one daughter, they are together in the 1861 census living at Egham. Elizabeth died in 1875 and John died in 1880.
Many thanks for the suggestion
Regards
Barbara

safc- thanks just looked at entry on Findmypast, it doesn't list Celia Tearle on that entry, i'll look at that in more detail. Thanks
Batmans daughter - thanks it's very interesting. It certainly ties in with the John Butt that I thought may be my relative in the 1851 census - father Timothy and the whole soldier question.

OK, something funny here;

London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921
about Josiah Coleman Name: Josiah Coleman >> ROYAL SAPPER!!
Age: 38
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1817
Spouse Name: Eliza Pitham >> WIDOW
Spouse Age: 34
Record Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 17 Sep 1855
Parish: St Nicholas, Plumstead
County: Kent
Borough: Greenwich
Father Name: Richd Coleman
Spouse Father Name: Wm Kinneard >>> Brewer

Now on the 1848 marriage William Kinnard is a Malster!!!

Barbara Report 23 Jun 2011 16:01

How strange, do you think that they are two different people. although Eliza & Elizabeth Pitham WIDOW is a little close for comfort?

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 23 Jun 2011 16:08

I think that maybe they are the same person.......... this gives a window of opportunity for John to go to Elizabeth Bullen???

Barbara

Barbara Report 23 Jun 2011 16:10

Sorry i'm being a bit thick (nothing unusual there!!) what do you mean?

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 23 Jun 2011 16:25

If it is your John that married in 1848..... this would be the reason that Elizabeth Bullen was under that name in 1851...... maybe they didn't marry and hence her name is the same in 1841??

Eliza Pitham (nee Kinnaird) if it is the same lady obviously didn't acknowledge her marriage to John Butt, and IF she was Johns wife then therefore he was already married and unable to marry Elizabeth Bullen??

Hope I've not confused you?? I'm having trouble gaining access to the 1841 census at the mo, Ancestry are doing work on it, but when I can have a look on it I'll have a dig about.

Ah, I see where you're coming from, certainly sounds like a possiblilty. Many thanks for your help

In 1841 Elizabeth Pitham was with an Ann Pitham (probably her mother-in-law, at Lambeth. I can't find her in 1851 either under Pitham or Butt. In 1861 Elizabeth Coleman - Widow is in Woolwich with daughters Elizabeth bc 1854 and Louisa b.c 1857. Maybe the birth of daughter Elizabeth Coleman in 1854 made her remarry in 1855 (although if we're right she shouldn't have done).
IF we're right John Butt was rather naughty having had a child with Elizabeth Bullen in 1846 and then marrying someone else in 1848, only to return to her by 1861
