Hi,

I have received the marriage certificate today, which I thought was going to help me trace the birth etc of Alice Dutton. She was my great uncles (Thomas Hill) 2nd wife first being Charlotte Hughes who unfortunately died 3 years after their marriage. Thomas married Alice in 1917 Birmingham On marriage cert is as:

Alice Kelly 33yrs widow no occupation father Thomas Dutton occupation packing case maker.

I have found a marriage of a Alice Dutton and a Edward Kelly in 1909 Aston, but cant not seem to find a birth for her. and can not find her in the 1911 census, Do not know where to go from here.

Can anyone help me out please, as this is really frustrating me

Thanks in advance

Di

Hello Diane - who were the witnesses to the marriage? Sometimes we may get some clues from them.

Diane Report 23 Jun 2011 19:35

No clues I'm afraid as the witnesses were Harry Shaw which was his brother in law and Charlotte Mulloy his Aunt.

I can see an Alice on 1891 and 1901 census with a father Thomas but cant find her birth.

As for 1911 cant see her anywhere.

I saw that Maddie, and wondered if they may have made packing cases out of tin plate (rather like those large vintage metal boxes).

I am thinking it is , even though his occupation is different surely that isn't unusual though, as it is 16 years before the marriage. The thing is I can not find a relevant birth for Alice, and can' t find her or her family in the 1911 census.

So annoying when you think the marriage certificate is going to help you , as so far it hasn't.
