Could Alice have married again after his death? There is this possible death on the Commonwealth War Graves site:-

Name: KELLY, EDWARD
Initials: E
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Hampshire Regiment
Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Date of Death: 06/08/1915
Service No: 17229
Additional information: Husband of Alice Hill (formerly Kelly), of 4 Back, 18, Moseley Rd., Birmingham.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 125-134 or 223-226 228-229 & 328.
Memorial: HELLES MEMORIAL

I can't see any army records for him on Findmypast.

Are you sure the child isn't right. It seems she didn't live long so may not have been known about in the family:-

Name: HILL, Jane
Registration District: Birmingham
County: Warwickshire
Year of Registration: 1922
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Age at death: 0
Volume No: 6D
Page No: 540

Alice's maiden name was Dutton so that is what should be on the birth certificate of any children.

Perhaps putting Kelly as her maiden name on one of the births was just a mistake. Perhaps Thomas registered the birth and got mixed up or didn't know her maiden name as she would have been Kelly when he married her.

I can't see another Hill/Dutton marriage that the baby who died could have been born to.

Kelly would be Alice's former married name. Your maiden name is always the name you are born with.

Perhaps she didn't tell Thomas at first that she had been married before.

The marriage WOULD be registered in the previous married name - but any children from the second marriage should still have the mother's maiden name (birth name) on the birth certificate.
