hi i m new to this site, any help in finding thomas's father and mother. he was born in bunbury in 1823, however, cant find any baptism for him or records. on his marriage to martha tomlinson he put down that his father was 'purported to be john hulse. i can find a thomas living with a john hulse and a martha in 1841, but the mystery is was he a hooley or a hulse and why 'purpoted.
thanks

Presumably Martha Hooley married John Hulse after Thomas's birth.
Or not, depending on which census you think he is in.

Hi all

as i said i am new to this site and have taken ages trying to get into the messages, i suppose it will come.

yes, batmansdaughter, i too have just come across that one after searching for ages, most of my hooley relies think the name goes way back. altho my dear departed mother told my paternal cousin that there had been a name change on that side of the family, wonder if mom had got the families mixed up. again when he married he said his dad was purported to be john hulse, have tried finding a marriage for martha hooley and john hulse but nothing. no baptism for him either.

thanks to everyone

Alternatively, they never married.
Maybe John gave some money to Thomas's mother for his upkeep, so you want to be looking for parish relief records.

Hi mollymandy

"purported" means that "believed to be"

you can see it written in some parish registers.

so Thomas is saying that John Hulse was believed to be his father ...... in other words, he didn't really know.
