JOHANN LUDWIG LIMBACH - Help needed!

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

YorkshireSandra Report 26 Jun 2011 19:05

I have a Johann Ludwig Limbach, who married a Catharine (Catharina) Magdalene Hoffmann in Hull in 1860. She was in Bradford by 1863 when son Louis was born. In 1865, she was a widow and married again, this time in Bradford, Yorks, to a Carl Ferdinand Metke Jessen (a widower) Although I can track Catharine & Carl after their marriage, I can find no death for Johann L Limbach or any evidence of him in the censuses. Any help would be appreciated!

Hello Sandra - where did you get your info from regarding Johann?

What nationality was he?

Have you got the marriage certificate for his age, occupation and father's details?

No, haven't got marriage cert. Assume he was German. Catharine was and second marriage was to a German. Yes, he could have been a sailor, but there seems to have been a lot of Germans in Hull around that time.

Thank you Iainie 39, but Louis survived till 1937. Also had a son called Louis!

alviegal, there may be a connection as Wuerttemberg was given on one of censuses as Catharine's place of birth, but if this one died within a few days, it can't be him.

Thanks for that, but I think I discounted that one earlier as she was married and Limbach by 1861. Also her birth seems to have been about1833 according to the later censuses. I rather suspect that when she remarried, in 1865, she wasn't a widow as Johann hadn't died, but left the country!!

Hello, I have found a record which may help -

Name John Limbeck
Birth 1831
Residence United States
Arrival 28 Mar 1866, Portland, Maine
Departure Liverpool, England

If this is a match, it would prove the theory that he left the country!

Thanks for that. It could be him as the birth is probably about the right time. Is anyone able to check the census for Portland, Maine to see if he appears on that, please?

Thanks for that suggestion, Maddie. There are some other "possibles" I'm looking at at the moment. I'll see where I get with those first.
