Thank you Thelma, that is brilliant news. I will certianly be using your advice about not using the GRO reference in the future. That is another thing that has change since I last started researching my family tree 3 years ago.
Best wishes Helen

It may be of interest to read :-

It goes someway to explaining why you should not order certs. with a GRO ref. unless you are sure it is the right one.

Order the birth from the GRO without giving a reference and they will refund your money if the cert. is the wrong one.
I guess that Frederick was born Hole and his mother later took the name of Miller.
All should become clear if you find his mother's previous name(s)

I am a little confused about whether the mariage reference I have is the correct one as Alices's parents are known as Frederick and Jane Miller not Hole on the censuses and as Frederick miller on his daughters marriage certificate. However Frederick Miller Hole married Jane Chamberlain at the right time and in the right place. Does anyone have any suggestions why he would use his first and middle names rather than his last name.
Thank you.

Thank you for your replies, It seems that Tiverton has it by a head :-) Is there any way to check it first or do I just have to pick a certificate, buy it and hope it is the right one and if it isn't buy another one for £9.25?

1911 census - married 38 years

Best wishes, Helen
p.s I am at the library and my time is running out but I will try to respond to any posts as soon as I am able. I do appreciate all your help.

Fred and Jane are together on the 1881 census living in Bradninch so yes it probably is their marriage.
On the 1911 census how long does it say Fred and Jane have been married?
