Hi there
Can anyone help me with this little problem? The family I am trying to sort out here is Morphew. In 1871, Ealing, we have Susanna C Morphew, unmarried, aged 45; her mother Susanna Morphew, widowed, aged 73. I have no problem in 1871 with these two. We also have 2 nieces, Dora K and Gertrude, both born Ceylon, with an indecipherable surname. Any suggestions?
Further down the page we have Ann S Morphew, a boarder aged 41 who is actually Susanna's younger sister, and over the page we have Osmond P Morphew, aged 10, shown as a boarder and born in Ceylon. Perhaps a nephew? It appears his Ayah is with him which makes me wonder if he didn't stay in England for very long, and returned to Ceylon.
As far as I can work out, Susanna (with her now deceased husband, John Morphew) had 4 children. Susanna Cullen Morphew (mentioned above) didn't marry and can be traced through censuses (1851 Guernsey) until her death in 1883. I can find Ann (Stuart, I think) Morphew in 1841 and 1871 only. Sarah disappeared from censuses after 1851 and James Boyd Morphew who I can trace in 1841, 1851 and 1881 only. I can find only Susanna (the daughter)'s death but none of the others.
I wonder if Sarah married and produced Dora and Gertrude, but how do I find out? Osmond could perhaps be the son of any of the other 3.
Sorry this is so long winded, but there seem to be so many unknowns I wasn't sure how to word it.
Thanks Sue

Ancestry has the girls surnames as O Grady. it does look like that on the actual page

Yes I agree it could be O'Grady. I suppose it's just that I can't find any record of either of them under that name, or indeed any other, and I was hoping for different thoughts.

I think this just makes it harder, but I have found O'Grady's born Ceylon in the 1881 census. Although neither of my two girls, but a Henrietta and a daughter, Evelyn?, also a sister Laura. Is this just a coincidence? I wouldn't have thought the name O'Grady was common in Ceylon, but maybe it is.

Thanks for all your lookups. Unfortunately, none of the Susannas are the ones I'm looking for.
Susanna Cullen married John Morphew in 1822, and then went on to have 4 children as mentioned above.
