Thanks for all the replies....Alfred Devereux born abt 1851 I understand he was in Merchant Navy and got 3 medals during war..could someone tell me how I go abt finding this out as I dont know what ship he was on.

Are you sure that someone born in 1851 would have been in the War? I assume you mean WW1.........

Did you perhaps mean 1881?

Merchant Navy records are, I believe, held at the National Archives
