for such a small place ... Ellwood City seems to have had a whole other clan of Haydens

if you google

hayden "ellwood city"

there are numerous results relating to the surname ... here is a family in information at rootsweb

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1927688&id=I111488544

the father was a John Denny Hayden born 1885 in Pennsylvania and all of the results seem to relate to that clan except for your own information about your Samuel Hayden and his letter ... for example I see you have had a message posted here, in 2008

http://www.ellwoodcitymemories.com/wordpress/tag/cole

possibly those other Haydens were related to Samuel back a generation ...

I would certainly try the historical society !

of course I agree that contacting the Ancestry user is important, that person is surely a family member

Ellwood is even smaller now than it was in World War II :-)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellwood_City,_Pennsylvania

a letter ( or email ) to the municipality could get your answer

http://www.ecboro.com/

http://www.ecboro.com/historical.htm

it has an historical society too, you could ask whether anyone has memories or records of the family

First I would like to thank every one for taking the time to find and send me all of this wonderful information, your kind help is greatly appreciated. It seems I'm on the right track as most of the information fits in with what i have, and sorting it out will keep me busy for a while. I hope you do'nt think me rood but there is a another question i would like to ask, but first i'll give you a brife over view of the letter.

The letter was sent on the 8th of October 1945 and gives a brife description of life around Mr Hadens home at the time, the return address is given simply as Rout 7 Ellwood City PA USA. Mr Hayden seems to know the family well as he states in the letter "When next you see your granddad tell him I say long time no see". The letter also sends the news that Mr Haydens grandson Joe has returned home safe from WW2 and includes a poem writen by Mr Hayden dedicated to the safe return of his grandson and to those familys who were not so lucky.

The other thing I'd like to discover is the location of Mr Haydens home in the Ellwood City area. I have looked on Google Earth but can find no trace of a Rout 7. I can of course understan that road systems and numbering may have changed over the past 60 years but I would like to discover where this old road ran in relation to Ellwood City. Is there any way of finding this old road or the location of Mr Haydens house if it still exists.
Once again thanks to every one for your kind assistance.

Thank's to all who've relyed. I'm new to using these threads and do'nt know the ropes yet.

The Samuel Hayden metioned by Marie looks promising and may well be the man I'm looking for.

Ginny asks what I'm looking for. Well there 's an historical mystery I've discovered in the course of researchin my family history. In our family album there is evidence of some connection to the UAS and or Canada. This evidence consists of the photo of a man wearing buck skins and holding a winchester rifle. The second pice of evidence is a letter sent to a member of the family by Mr Samuel Hayden on the 8th of October 1945 from Ellwood City PA. The letter suggests that the sender knows the family well and specificaly mentions one of our GT grandfathers. Unfortunatly the generation who compled the album and recived the letter have all passed away so I'm unable to identify the man in the photo or dicover what connection Mr Hayden had with the family.

I have proved however that the photo was taken in a photographic studio in Toronto and the fact that Ellwood City lays within a 200mile radius of Toronto posses a fascinating coincidence. This mystery has me fascinated and I would love to get to the bottom of it.

Hello George, might be an idea to edit your thread title to reflect that you're looking for USA info. (Click "Edit" on your post and you can then access the title).

This might fetch it to the attention of people who have access to the appropriate records.

Good luck.
