Fearnley surname in Armley, Yorkshire

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

William

William Report 4 Jul 2011 23:20

William Fearnley Milner b. 1825 in Armley, Yorkshire - son of William Milner and Hannah ?. I assume that his middle name of Fearnley pertains to an ancestral surname that has been passed down and would liketo trace the linkage. If anyone else is researching Fearnley from this area and can throw a light on his ancestry, would be great to get in touch.

It could be Hannah's maiden name perhaps ?

Mary Milner in the 1851 household with father William born in Adwalton does match that Mary Milner baptism though doesn't it seem Sylvia ? :-)

I wonder if this marriage could have some connection?

Birstall is less than two miles south of Adwalton ...... it could be Hannah's home .....

edit

in the 1851 census for example there are several Fearnleys born before and shortly after 1800 in Birstal or Birstall Yorkshire

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Jul 2011 01:40

and the same marriage from ancestry

West Yorkshire, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1512-1812 about Antony Fearnly

Name: Antony Fearnly
Marriage Date: 26 Dec 1782
Parish: Dewsbury, All Saints
Spouse's Name: Susannah Milnes <<<<< it is Milner on the register

Antony is a Clothier

of course that is not unusual in Yorkshire :-D

chrissie

the Mary in 1851 could indeed be the same one for whom I found the baptism :-D

and thank you for looking up where Birstall was

interestingly, one of my family lines is traced to back to Birstall, and at about this same era. But NOT Milner, Fearnley, or any other name showing so far!

AHA

chrissie found:-

Name: Edmund Fearnley Milner

System Origin: England-ODM
Source Film Number: 918399
Reference Number:

and this could well be the marriage of Edmund's parents:-

record title: England Marriages, 1538–1973

groom's name: John Milner
bride's name: Sarah Fearnley
marriage date: 09 Oct 1831
marriage place: Saint Peter,Leeds,York,England
indexing project (batch) number: M07193-4
system origin: England-ODM

so I wonder if there has been interweaving of the Fearnley and Milner families over several generations?

William

William Report 5 Jul 2011 07:33

Eliza Milner b. 1829 was my great-grandmother and sister of William Fearnley Milner. She married Thomas Henry Hall and their grandson born in NZ was Edward Fearnley Milner Hall. The Fearnley and Milner names have continued on into other relatives, although died out in recent generations.

If Hannah ? was a Fearnley when she married William Milner, that would solve it. But as mentioned on here, the most likely marriage is with a Hannah Crosfield - but cannot be 100% of that.

The link lurks but there is a heavy repeat of the same names in this geographic location around those times i.e. Fearnley and Milner.

you're welcome William but I suppose you knew much of what we 'found' including the marriage found by Sylvia ................

William

William Report 5 Jul 2011 22:22

The marriage of John Milner to Sarah Fearnley is intriguing and perhaps the interweaving of the two families is a strong possibility. How this links to William Milner as father of William Fearnley Milner I am not sure but it surely cannot be just coincidence.

I had wondered whether William's parents (mother or grandmother on the paternal side) were a Fearnley. Definitely the Fearnley comes from a surname though.
