Find Ancestors

Hi,

My daughter lives in an old property and I am sure it pre-dates the 1911 census.

I wondered if anyone could find who lived in her house and the 2 neighbouring properties where her best friends live.

The address is 22 Burghley road, Peterborough and the other 2 are 18 and 20.

Please don't use credits to help me, but if anyone has a subscription I would be very grateful.

Have you traced back using the electoral register, or had a look at old maps to check out that there hasn't been a name change for the road?

I have just found a map from 1886. Burghley road was called Lincoln Road East back then.

The house was part of the row called Kilburn Cottages

Re. electoral registers - these are found at the nearest main library. Obviously a bit limited, and pretty useless before 1919, but might give some info at least. Glad you found it on a map!

I've found the Kilburn Cottages in the 1881 census; there appears to be six of them in Lincoln Road East, Peterborough. They can be found in District 39 starting on Page 25.

In the census you have
1-36 Lincoln Road East
then
4-1 Lorne Cottages
then
1-6 Kilburn Cottages
then
47 onwards Lincoln Road East

which would suggest that the Cottages were 37-46 Lincoln Road East

Sorry for not replying, I've been to work and as my last entry was about 10am I didn't think I'd get any more replies.

Jan - sorry Walton is too far away - approx 1 - 2 miles

The road opposite the houses is called St Marks street so Jan your 2nd find seems closer.

Londonbelle - Kilburn cottages are at one end of the road and could very definately be the ones you found. There is a pub now and then my daughter lives possibly 5 houses along. If this is correct then she would live at number 6 and her friends at numbers 4 and 5.

If you contact the local council archives they can give you the full history of who has lived in the house

On the 1881 census at No 49 Lincoln Road East is 'The Fountain Inn' perhaps this the pub you are referring to?


However, in the 1891 census 'The Fountain Inn' is No2 Lincoln Road East!

and

In the 1901 census 'The Fountain Inn' is No2 Lincoln Road East


I'm just wondering whether your daughter's house would be 22 Lincoln Road East? Perhaps they just changed the name of the Road but not the house number

Wow has the fountain been there that long. It is still there but called the rose. It is owned by my daughters landlord.
Next to the pub there is a big house and then a row of six . On the map I found the row of cottages were called Kilburn cottages and she is the 6th.

In the 1911 Summary Book there are

there doesn't appear to be a No 8 or No 10

So on what you have said above it looks as if your daughter lives at No 22 Lincoln Road East which appears to be a Shop in 1911 with living accommodation above.

On checking the 1911 census no properties are listed for Nos 8, 10 & 16.
