Alexander Johnston Ireland Help Please

Alexander Johnston b.2.8.1912 in Rutherglen. When he was 16 he was sent from Scotland to work on a farm in Ireland. He worked there for three years until his father was notified of his death in an accident. His father a widower travelled to Ireland for the funeral only to find the burial had already taken place. I have spent a long time trying to locate where he lived and died.
Alec did not have family in Ireland. Family history had the area as Antrim. However there is a death registered at Stranorlar, Donegal for Alexander J. between April to June 1932 . his birth was estimated as 1913 and age when he died was given as 19. I obtained a death certificate for Alexander it said he died the County Home age 19, bachelor, labourer on 11.4.1932. I have found out that he is buried in the church at Stranorlar and there is no headstone. His death cert. states that he died of epilepsy which if it is him was unkown to his family. I cannot prove that he is our A.J. though it fits. I am hoping there is someone who can help with info. re the County Home. What was it and are there any records about that would help.

Moira...This should explain...

After the formal abolition of the workhouse system in 1930, many former workhouses were redesignated as Public Assistance Institutions (PAIs). These establishments were administered by local Public Assistance Committees set up by county or county borough councils and were sometimes known as County Institutions or **County Homes****. PAIs provided accommodation for the elderly, chronic sick, single unmarried mothers and, in many cases, vagrants. The Institutions inherited many staff and inmates from the workhouse era and were not that different from their predecessors except that there were no uniforms, and the residents (rather than "inmates") could come and go as they pleased.

Donegal Board of Health and Public Assistance

The Board was formed under the Local Government Act, 1925, to take over administration of public health for the county, and to assume some of the functions of the abolished Rural District Councils. Among these functions were the building of rural cottages, water supply and sewerage schemes. The Boards were abolished in 1942.

•District hospitals: Carndonagh; Donegal; Glenties; Letterkenny; County Hospital, Lifford;
