I am having great difficulty researching this surname. The genes community has helped enormously in finding the records for Joan Olive Mary Robinson-Williams and I have now found other relatives from 1917 onwards. My problem now is that I can find no record, census or otherwise for Joseph Robinson-Williams born 1875/1878. On Joseph's marriage certificate to Dorothy Una Smith in Greenwich in1917 Joseph's father is recorded as Alfred Robinson-Williams (deceased) occupation Butcher, I can find no record of him either. There are many Robinson-Williams around the Greenwich/Dartford area but none seem to match up. Where do I go from here please? I am beginning to wonder if they came in from abroad but don't know where to start to look

From the marriage cert......................

What was Joseph's occupation?

What was his address?

Who witnessed the marriage?

Possibly he was born as Robinson or Williams, but not both, and only combined them at a later stage.
It happened in my family.

Thank you all who have replied to me on this, I am sorry that I have not been able to find your replies - still very green with this thing! It is his death in 1928 notified by Dorothy Una. I have a copy of their marriage certificate it states that they were both living at 15 Manor Road Brockley. Joseph was a bachelor aged 42 occupation engineer Royal Woolwich Arsenal. Dorothy was aged 23 and was spinster. I believe that she was 18 from the research that I have done but she would have needed consent to marry under 21 in those days. Joseph's Father's name was Alfred Robinson Williams (deceased) occupation Butcher. Dorothy's Father John Edward Smith (deceased ) occupation it looks like Printer.

The marriage was witnessed by C.K. Payn(?) and E.G. Bale. Date of marriage 7 July 1917. I realise that the name may have been either Williams or Robinson but I can't find anything that matches up with what I already know. Some of Dorothy and Joseph's children went to live in USA and Canada and I was wondering if Alfred (Joseph's Father came was an immigrant. How do I look for that? Dorothy went on to marry twice more, once to a Mr Ward i 1929 and the a Mr Dilworth.
