Peter Report 13 Jul 2011 14:28

Jane Cripps was born in Kent(Chatham or Gillingham)circa 1835 and died in Colchester in 1867, aged 32. In 1858, she married Jonah Bowers, a soldier serving 21 years, and had 4 children, Edward (1859), Esther Jane (1860), William (1863) and James (1865). The marriage cert. showed Jane Cripps's father as William Haynes, although she was probably too young to have been married before, so William Haynes was possibly her stepfather or guardian. After Jane's death, Jonah left the army in 1868, remarried the same year, then returned to his birth town of Burslem. Staffs. Please, can anyone help with any information concerning Jane's family before she was married to Jonah Bowers? I am unable to trace her birth or find her in any census before 1861.

Do you have any of the birth certificates for Jane's children?
That should show her maiden name.

It wasn't that uncommon for women to be widowed very young.

Flick Report 13 Jul 2011 14:37

Have you looked for a prior marriage? Having said that, if she'd been married before, the info should be on the marriage cert.........unless, of course, she wasn't a widow, in which case, she wouldn't have been able to refer to it

What was the stated occupation of William Haynes?

Given that army families tended to marry within the profession I wonder about this one
1851 Truro Cornwall
William Hase 58 Police Constable/Chelsea Pensioner, Sergt b Ireland
Mary Hase 50 wife Dressmaker b St Mary Truro
JANE 15 daur b CHATHAM Kent
George 10 b St Mary Truro
Mary 5 b St mary Truro
Fanny 3 b St Mary Truro

I wonder if Jane was born prior to the marriage with William and have searched for a marriage Mary Cripps to William Hase but no luck -of course it could have been before 1837 or even abroad
I am assuming that the "Haynes "might have been a miss-hearing by the registrar
