Cherilyn,

Yes I did mean Thomas not James. ( James is their son)

It is interesting that she used her maiden name for her marriage to William Field and it was before Thomas died ( assuming it is him who died in 1850)

Had a good day today with contact from a lady from Leicester who had some information on the parents of the husband of Maria Baker ( daughter of Thomas and Maria).

Every little bit helps.

Best wishes

Jo

Great news, Jo!

Sometimes the smallest tidbit of info can bring the greatest results! :-)

Interesting tho - seems she married as Cousins? and before Thos' death in 1850? (you say James - do you mean Thos?)

Helen and Cherilyn,
I have had a find this morning after a brilliant thought in the middle of the night. I have found Maria Cousins burial in Geelong.

On her daughter's marriage certificate she lists her mother's maiden name as Field not Cousins. Sure enought there is a Maria Field and it lists her father as James Cousins and mother Jane Price. She was born in Brighton UK. Maria married a William Field after James Baker died.

Now for some work back in the UK.

Cherilyn,

These two burials look promising. The burial for Thomas Baker was from the same church as his daughter's marriage in 1855 The burial for Mary Baker was from the Roman Catholic Church. Maybe she has come from Ireland not UK. I may have to follow this further.

Helen,
This is Maria, the daughter of Maria Cousins. Do you know if you can access details of the will online?

many thanks for all your help

There is a death in Vic for Thomas BAKER in 1850; he is buried at Geelong Eastern Cemetery.

In the same burial area (C of E), there is a Mary BAKER who died in 1847 aged 30. Fits for age?

Helen,

Thank you. I have a copy of the marriage certificate of Thomas Baker and Maria Cousi(e)ns but it does not give any information of where they came from. I also have drawn a blank on their deaths. They went to Victoria and their daughter, Maria was married in Geelong and died in Ballarat. I have tried searching in surrounding cemetery records but no luck yet.
best wishes

I am trying to trace my GGGgrandmother, Maria Cousins. She came to Australia on the "Strathfieldsay" from Gravesend in 1834. She was 18 years ( born about 1816). She married Thomas Baker in Tasmania and went to Victoria Aus in 1840 with 2 children,James and Maria. I would love to find where she came from in the UK and also where she died and was buried in Australia. Any information would be appreciated
