Electoral Rolls for Essex

hope someone can help, how far back do the electoral rolls go and where is it possible to view them.

I am looking in particular for Dagenham Essex and my great grandmother Helen Easter Howard (previously Gilbert). She was born in norwich but just found out from her son's burial on the CWGC site that she was living in Dagenham when he was killed at El Alamein 1942.

If you mean for 1942, there were no electoral rolls compiled for most years in WW2 1939/45

hi george, didnt know that would it possible for say 1938/early 1939 for electoral rolls still to be published. not sure when she moved to dagenham.

George_of_Westbury Report 14 Jul 2011 16:41

You might be alright for 1938

I understand that electoral rolls are available in the main library only in the area concerned, they are not online.

Someone will correct me if i am wrong.

I should wait before you go to Essex, someone will come along to confirm my thoughts.I woulnt want you to have a wasted journey.

I would also contact the Main library in dagenham and ask them if they have the info you are seeking, you never know they might help you over the phone, i know some charge and some dont, you never know your luck.

George

Perhaps you could also email them

Tracey
The British library also holds copies of all the electoral registers that are available.
I do know that if you email them telling them which ones you wish to search they will get them for your planned visit as not all of them are held on the St. Pancras site but they are very helpful and it usually only takes a day to get the ones you want
Good Luck with your search

Bear in mind that you need the ADDRESS for historical ER searches

Keeley1973 Report 14 Jul 2011 19:51

You might have some luck with getting someone at the Records Office to help you out. I had some luck with Enfield for Edmonton info simply by casually dropping into conversation "Do I have to make an appointment - I need to know because I am 3 hours away" - lol. They gladly offered to find out what I needed. But Flick is right, you have to know the address as this is the only way you can search them.

Tracey Report 14 Jul 2011 20:01

thank you everyone. the address is the only snag, i do not know where she was living in Dagenham, just it shows Dagenham as her address when her son was killed in 1942. To be honest cant think why she moved when all her family was still in Norwich.

Keeley1973 Report 14 Jul 2011 20:09

Just a thought - do you know when she died and was she still living in the same area then? If you got her death cert there would be an address on there. If it is the same one (long shot) you could check to see how long she had lived there?

Von Report 14 Jul 2011 21:37

Tracey
There is another possibility that her son's death might have been reported in the newspapers.Might be worth a search.
