I am trying to put peices of a puzzel together. I have my Grandmother living at an address in 1929, when she gave birth to my father who was later adopted. She was a Nursemaid domestic of 13 Castlemain or Castleman Mansions Barnes ( Surrey ? London.) Her name was Beatrice May Whitlock. ( Unmarried mother).

Is it possible to bring up this address in the 1911 census without putting in names? I just want to know who was living in that address as it may help with my research. Hopefully the same family owned it in 1929.

Many thanks
Maria.

GlitterBaby Report 16 Jul 2011 10:17

The problem is the spelling

Seems to be Castelnan or Castelnau or Castleman

Then there is Mansions, Row, Gardens

Maria Report 16 Jul 2011 10:18

Hi Guys , looking at the Birth cert Castlenan is Possible, The writing on these things is never readable. Maddie it just says, 13 Castlenan man main (LOL) Mansions Barnes and the district on the cert is Central Hackney.

Hi Maddie ... The birthcert has the registration district as Central Hackney. The Grans address is as mentioned... it does say my dad was born in The mothers hospital Clapton, whether that has any bearing.. I am in Australia, even though I was born in london I have no real knowledge of the place .

Maddie

Maddie Report 16 Jul 2011 10:44

ahh with you now
the registration district has nothing to do with where she lived

Birth Records At The Mothers' Hospital, Clapton, London

The medical records of the Mothers' Hospital are kept by the NHS and are stored in the archives at St Bartholomew's Hospital. The Hackney Borough Council Archives also have a copy of the Mothers' Hospital register of births, on microfilm.

Babies born to girls from the Mother and Baby Homes in London (either at the Mothers' Hospital or in the last few years of Ivy House) are listed with their mothers' records in the 'Girls Statement Books' in the Social Services Archives of the International Heritage Centre. The later records (after 1930) are held by Major David Clark (R) - The Salvation Army Social Services Historian.

Maddie Many thanks for those Census sheets. I have researched my mothers family back to the 1500's. My fathers has been on hold as I had no idea of his birthname only his adoptive name. This birth cert I have received Has been in my hand for three days and I can't believe the history involved with the family. The gggg Grandfather Henry ( not above) Was commisioned by Queen Victoria to build the Royal coaches and was the founder of the Whitlock motor Car. Also (WHITLOCK, Hector Harold Son M 7 1904 School London Hendon) ABOVE , My Grandmothers brother was an Olympian, won a gold medal in the 36 Olympics in Berlin Germany, broke his own world record and so much more. His brother was also an Olympian ( REX) Bernard. The more I discover the more I am facinated. I just can understand why my father had to be adopted. And I wonder if there is a connection to the family which adopted him as they were londoners.

Thank you Chooky for that information, Hopefully I can gleem some information from the Salvation Army.

Many thanks Ladies .

whow that is some history
my guess as she was an unmarried mother, in those days it would cause shame to her family and girls were forced to give up their child if they were not quickly married
good luck in you research
