Now, I was trying to trace back to Alice Duller's parents. I know that the parents of Jospeh Duller were William Duller b. 1845 (Chatteris) and Mary Ann Duller b. 1851 and through various census I have traced (I think!) that they had a total of between 13 and 15 children including Joseph. So seeing that Alice was named as a visitor at this address, I assumed she was the child of a male sibling of Joseph (i.e that he was her uncle). However, on getting the birth cert for Alice, the 'parents' at this address are named as her own parents!! I am confused at to how this would be as they clearly have her as a visitor, in addition to which they say they have 2 living children (1 died which I have traced) and the 2 living children are already noted on this census. To top that, 1 of the children is the same age as her - hmmm. The only thought I had was that maybe she was "adopted" even though that did not legally exist at the time? and in that case, would it have been the adopted parents who usually registered the birth? is this normal? I note this was done about 5 weeks after the birth. I suppose I thought it would have been the birth mother.

By the way, for info - the mother of this household has been transposed completely incorrectly - it is actually "Harriet Naomi"

Thanks
Keeley

Well you have 6 weeks to register a birth so it was within the time frame. They do state 3 children born 1 died which would be the son listed . I would say it was probably a slip of the pen when the census was filled in putting her as visitor, Even if she was "adopted" they surely would have said she was a daughter. The fact you have her birth cert confirms she was their child,

But if they had 3 children born alive but only 2 still living - this would be Kate and Charles from the census. I assumed the child born and died aged 1 was the "3rd" child and that his newer brother was named after him (as I have found this happened quite a bit!). If Alice was another of their children, I would have thought it would have shown 4 in total, 3 living?! Can't remember if I saw a birth for the 2nd Charles, I will check ...

Probably read it as list all children born to the marriage and when the enumerator saw it he put a line through the entry. I think he put Charles aged aged 1 because he never got past that age .poor mite.

We had a very funny skit done at one of our Family History Soc meetings by two ladies who go around the Society's as guest speakers, Its was hilarious BUT did show the side of how not to believe all you read on census info .

Thanks everyone. I guess this now makes more sense. Bearing in mind this was I believe the first year that the householder filled in the forms, I think you are probably right that they included him by mistake (probably confused them that the question asked about living/dead children) - seems relevant they completed aged 1 and he died aged 1. This means Alice probably was their other "proper" child, though quite why she was noted as a visitor I have no idea (unless again they were confused and she wasn't at their property that night but visiting somebody else!)

You are also right, there were subsequent children after - Ada and John but no, the family did not go to Peterbourough, stayed in North Witchford/March.

Thanks again
Keeley
