Grateful if anyone can advise on an option where you can search for a name and see the list of children that they had? My Mother had a baby late 1930's/1940's (unmarried), then later married and had myself and my twin. The first baby would have been registered with my Mother's maiden name, but I have no Christian name for the baby.

Thank you in anticipation.....

Sandra :-)

Have you checked out FreeBMD

Some of their records are up to the 1930's and 1940's but it is not complete as the work is done by volunteers

Or do you have access to Ancestry

BUT of course we are then presuming you are talking about England and Wales and not another country

I have a possibility of 3 areas to search. The maiden name is very common within England...Cooper! Which part of the site do I type in my Mother's name? Births would just give me her birth? Is there a link somewhere to find out all her children? It seems so simple that it couldn't be !!??

Sandra :-D

Thanks for advice. Yes, access to Ancestry. What searches can I do there besides BMD ?

Yes, it was England....

Use freebmd
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Enter surname if known in first part, no christian name, then mother's maiden name, again no christian name

Only works for births after 1911

PM recd and sent a big list just for leicestershire alone for 1935-1945 .female births

I think a christian name is required to locate the right one.

Was just outlining a general rule.

As Sandra asked about finding a list of ALL births born to mother with maiden name Cooper, then a Christian name would limit it too much

Thank you all for your response. Especially helpful is the freebmd/rootsweb site, saves me trawling through other lists as it gives details straight off Mother's maiden name and baby's surname being same. Thanks everyone.

Although FreeBMD has essentially completed transcribing most births thru the 1930s, only half the 1940's quarters are essentially completed.
The earlier incomplete quarters are:

Births Sep 1857 (98%) *
Births Dec 1918 (98%) *
Births Sep 1939 (97%) **
Births Dec 1939 (0%) **************

If you need a complete list from the 1940s, in your case you'll need to use Ancestry.
The following description apples to the old style search.
Select Search in the main banner bar, then BMDs incl parish.
Select Eng & Wales BMD index from the Featured Titles, then Births 1916-2005
Show advanced options & search for Last Name=Cooper Mum's MS=Cooper - you can also limit dates and location. Remember to check the exact matches box.

NB To get the "Old Search" style, select Search - all records in the main banner bar.
The old/new switch is now just below the main banner bar, at extreme right.
