It was possible that John Newton Dunce married an Ellen by looking at the marriage entry. But I can see after seeing the census for 1881 that it was Jane that he married.

Jackie, I think you are probably better off to get the birth cert for one of the children before ordering any marriage certs as this should show mother's maiden name.

As I said John Newton Dance is not yours as he did not marry an Ellen

I only posted the census to show you the marriage in 1879 was wrong

My gtgt gt grandparents started having children in 1837 and married in 1863 she was always known by his name and all the children were registered in the fathers name just as though they were married.
As said a birth cert of one of the children will confirm her maiden name

Mike, thanks for finding that, it looks like maybe they didn't get married till 1899. I think I might send for the birth cert, good idea.

Moonbeam, I just don't know, I might send for the cert on this as well

District Newbury spans the boundaries of the counties Berkshire and Hampshire. I see that Elle was born in Hampshire according to the 1911 Census.

Maybe they lied about how long they had been married?

Could anyone help me find the marriage of John Dance and Ellen please?
The 1911 census staes they are married for 32 years therefore we should find the marriage around 1879. I can't find them on the 1881 census either.
