Would anyone be kind enough to look up......?

Annie Halstead, probably with husband John Henry Halstead and daughter Mildred. There may be other children.
Shows up on Ancestry, but I don`t have access to these particular records.

Thank you
Sheila

I have taken a look. Whilst there are some on Ann Halstead entries none appear to be travelling with others with the names you give.

What were the birth years of the Halstead family members?

Thank you Maddie, I had found that info, but then got stuck

Just out of curiosity why do you think that Annie and possibly Mildred went to Canada?

I wonder whether this might be her remarrying:

Hi

Annie Halstead came up in the hints on Ancestry in Canada arrivals. It was possible for her to have emigrated after death of husband, but couldn`t check the info.
Thank you for your help. I will look at the marriage info.

You`re a star!
Looked at the marriage but would be too early if husband killed in war. There are a number of Annie Halsteads which adds to the difficulty.
I`ll keep looking
Thank you

Having looked at the cwgc site I am not convinced that either of the 2 John Henry Halstead deaths during WW1 are your man. There is no info to link either to a wife that I can see.

Hello Jonesy

In 1911 John Henry Halstead was living in Elland at 62 Elizabeth St, Elland.
The probate record for John Henry who was killed March 18th 1918 says that he was living at 62 Windsor Tce, Elizabeth St, Elland.
However, he left his money to Agnes Brearly and Florence Hettie Halstead, spinster.
I am now going to work backwards and find Florence Hettie. What do you think?

Addition to post
Have now found Florence Hettie, sister of John Henry. Their father was George H. On the marriage record for John Henry and Annie, his father was George Henry.
Florence died a spinster of 102 years!

Thank you Margee.

I think it isn`t the correct Annie, but haven`t ruled it out completely. Thanks for your help

Hi Sheila,

The probate record that you found is undoubtedly The John Henry Halstead who is shown in the 1911 census and therefore was at that time living with his wife Annie. The question I suppose now is when did he make out that will? Was it before his marriage or had he and Annie parted company before he made it? I suppose the fact that he did not leave his estate to Annie would be covered in either circumstance but somehow I favour the latter.

The plot thickens!

Sheila

Sheila Report 19 Jul 2011 19:16

Hello again
I am looking for Annie now after John Henry`s death. The will possibly was an early one as his children are not mentioned.

I wonder if you are instructed to make a will before you go to war.

You are right, the plot thickens further!

Jonesey Report 19 Jul 2011 19:40

John Henry's service records do not appear to have survived (70% destroyed by fire) but I have found his medal index card which indicates that he was awarded the British and the Victory medals but not the Star medal. That would imply that he did not serve at the very beginning of WW1 in 1914/5.

I may be wrong but I believe that all serving soldiers were encouraged if not instructed to make a will. If he made the will that went to probate in 1919 under that circumstance the fact that he did not mention his wife or children probably indicated that he was estranged from them when he made his will. In order to find out the date the will was made will entail purchasing a copy of it which will cost you £6 from the Probate Registry office. See http://www.lawontheweb.co.uk/Probate/Probate_Offices
