Hi,

I am looking for help tracing parents of Moses Martyn. Moses married a Catherine Porter. Moses father was a John Martyn, however, I am unable to trace his date of birth or Moses's mothers date and place of birth together with any details of siblings? Is anybody able to help please.

FYI - from parish records (Cornwall parish records) Moses was born Aug 1700 in Stratton, Cornwall.

Thank for you help.

"from parish records (Cornwall parish records) Moses was born Aug 1700 in Stratton, Cornwall."
- is that information from the online parish clerk for Stratton? - who can be contacted here: http://www.cornwall-opc.org/Par_new/q_s/stratton.php

Interesting, I cannot see the marriage just given in the database compiled by volunteers. However, there is a marriage in Poughill, which is a nearby parish, for a John to a Bridget Orchard.

Tinkers - pedigrees are useful to follow through if they have verified information but I am always wary of the expression "Abt".

I agree with Joy Kentish Maid about vague unverified records

the baptism was in 1698 so someone has simply decided that the parents married 'about 1698', even though the baptism was in July of that year ...

the parents could have married much earlier and or in another place ( and had children in another place even ) or could have been unmarried even

that 'record' does not give a name for the wife, just that she was 'Mrs Jane', no source given for the 'Jane' though, maybe the other child's baptism ? and there is no reason to assume that the parents both were born where their children were baptised .....

you have considered other spellings ?

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html

Name: John Marten <<<
Gender: Male
Baptism/Christening Date: 24 Jul 1698
Baptism/Christening Place: STRATTON,CORNWALL,ENGLAND
Father's Name: John Marten
Mother's Name:
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C04298-1

Moses 1700 is recorded as Martyn

chrissiex Report 19 Jul 2011 23:47

pilot.familysearch shows baptisms to a John Martyn and Jane before 1698

Elizabeth 1685 St Dominick
John 1687 "
Jane 1689 "
Anthony 1693 "
Stephen 1696 "

all that can be said is that these are 'not inconsistent' with the births you have ... it is not unusual that a couple would name another child the same name as a child who had died also so a John born in 1687 does not mean that a John might not have been born later

St Dominick is not especially close to Stratton but the family could have moved

without verification of the name 'Jane' for the mother this is as random a possibility as any of numerous other John Martyn marriages in Cornwall in the records e.g. at freereg

Hi,

Thanks for the response. Ok, so not as clear cut. Interestingly I could find the grave of Moses in Teath but not one of Jane, although many are very difficult to read in all honesty.

I think the change of spelling maybe correct - thank you. This does help in opening a wider circle to have a look at. Thanks for the input.

What did you think of the marriage in Poughill, which is a nearby parish, in the OPC database?
