Hannah Graham - St George Hanover Square

Hannah Graham was my Great Grandmother - parent to Ivy Stevens. Hannah married Stevens in September 1912 (I have marriage certificate). On the certificate it says that her face Henry Graham was deceased at this time - she was 23 at time of marriage. I am unable to find any other records including birth certificate for Hannah. I did think i'd found it, as I found a birth in St George, Hanover Square in 1889 which tied in perfectly. Having received this birth certificate the father was named as George William Graham - so have come to a dead end!

I understand that Hannah & her husband George Stevens were Barnardos children but again cannot find any information about this. If any one can give any advice, that would be great!

Thanks

jax

The trouble with marraige and death certs they are not always accurate.

She may not have known who her father was...so just made one up or did not remember as he died when she was young?

Hello Lisa, the Hannah with William George is trackable on the census but I can't see another Hannah Graham in London the same time.

Jax is quite right in what she says about the accuracy of certificates.

Although it says Henry is deceased, does it give his former occupation? Who are the witnesses?

That's ther one I spotted Jax, but at the time I never noticed the Henrys.

Could Jane Henry be her grandma and might that be where she got names confused?

Lisa Report 21 Jul 2011 16:26

Thanks all, that's the birth certificate I have but assumed it was wrong as the fathers name didn't match up to the one on the marriage certificate

On the marriage certificate her deceased fathers profession was a 'Coachman'. The witnesses for the marriage are Daisy Corderoy and Joseph E Lennon

Good point, also noticed her younger brother is Henry Graham and that's the name on the marriage certificate so definitely could have been some confusion

Thank you all so much, feel like i'm getting somewhere now - I gave up last year when things didn't match

The 'Inmate' piece could tie in with the Barnados

This is all tying in - notice that 2 of the children (Hannah's older brother George and sister Caroline) were in the care of a Widowed Aunt in the 1901 census - looks like Hannah went into home, 2 went to live with an Aunt, not sure what happened to the youngest Henry or the oldest yet

In the 1901 that Jax and Jansmith posted for Hannah she was in St Anne's Home.

Here is the National Archives link for that home - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/details.asp?id=100&page=57

It appears it was a convalescent home for children.

Just another question from this

George Graham husband to Hannah Graham (married 1912, westminster, residence was 25 Cumberland Street Pimlico) was a widower at time of marriage, is there anyway of tracking down his first wife's name as I believe there are children or is it guess work?

He was born in 1889

Sorry, wasn't sure whether to start a new thread or not

jax

jax Report 22 Jul 2011 14:27

You mean George Stevens?

What was his occupation when they married?
