For the 1871 we need her maiden name as 1881 she is Matthew's wife. At the moment I can't find a marriage.

did you get the name Stanley from the birth cert of daughter Mary?

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 24 Jul 2011 14:28

is this possibly also the Mary on the 1881 census - dates would fit even if the spelling of Theresa is a little unusual!!

Lancashire Ann that sounds like her. No father?
They did live in Widnes/Prescot.
There is also a Maud b 1887 Cuerdley
Henry 1882 Widnes.

Theresa was jailed for GBH in 1891 for 18months
Don't know what happened to the children as they didn't carry on living with Matthew!!

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 24 Jul 2011 16:26

Sounds like Matthew would not have been fit to look after the children. I wonder if he was a bully when he had been drinking, presumably all the housekeeping money, and she was at the end of her tether.

One article also insinuated that they were not married as it stated ' they had been cohabiting for 11 years'.

Did the child born in 1891 survive? The article said Theresa had 'recently been confined'.

(just curious after reading the newspaper articles)

Susan

Susan Report 24 Jul 2011 17:29

All 3 children survived (I think)
Where they went is one of my brickwalls.
I have misplaced the newspaper article. I didn't know that she was confined in 1891. Wouldn't be confined to prison?

Nice to know that my Great Grandfather (Matthew) was a drunk and tried to batter his wife first.

Margee, I know that there was this G/R thread.
I was referring to the actual newspaper article that someone sent me with more information about the GBH.

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 25 Jul 2011 13:42

it was from the Liverpool Mercury report from the Assizes on 30th July

he came home having taken some drink and she had words about money

'She had recently been confined and was very weak and did not know what she was doing when she threw the lamp'
