You can search the US census 1850-70 (and view images) at:
https://www.familysearch.org/s/collection/list#page=1®ion=NORTH_AMERICA

There were earlier censuses, but they only named the head of h/h, and gave age/sex categories for the rest of the h/h.

Maritime Archives & LibrarySheet No. 31 : Official Records of Passengers

Introduction
Britain made no attempt to record its emigrants or other passengers during the 19th century. The National Archives (PRO) holds some record of aliens arriving in British ports, from the late 18th century onwards amongst its Home Office records, eg HO 3 contains returns of alien passengers made under the Aliens Act, 1836, by masters for voyages made between 1836-1869 (except 1861-1866). Another possible source of information could be the passenger lists of HM steam packets carrying passengers to, from and within the Mediterranean area, 1831 to 1834 (ADM 30/35). (For further information consult the National Archives leaflet, Passenger Lists Domestic Records Information 56 available online at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk).

I wonder if anyone can help me, I've been told that my G.Grandfather James Earley was born in New York in abt 1838, Father's name Michael, born Ireland abt 1802. Michael died in Ireland in1877 and James married in Ireland in 1879 so it's got to be before then. What I would like to find out is when James and Michael travelled from the USA, I'm presuming they came back together. Don't know who Michaels wife was, was she with them?

I'm thinking that they docked in Liverpool, is there a site which has these records?
