Wow, those crept in while I was answering Patchem's reply. Looks like Anne is on the ball as always, although I'm still trying to figure it out.
I'm not as quick as you folks, heaps of thanks anyway.

1881 has a Mary Gaffrey (Gaffney?) as mother in law, perhaps Mary was unmarried when she had the first 3 children?

Thanks Patchem, I already saw that. I've now looked at Household Record and what I thought was Ian is in fact given as Tom and that would correspond to her two sons, Wm & Thomas.
I still haven't a clue where 'Gaffney' crept in, as they were all Sudbury's in previous census's!

It's "Mrs Sudbury" who completed the census. She has stated she'd given birth to 16 children, 6 of which lived.

Knowing there are some clever and knowledgeable folks on this side, I'm looking for the answer to a puzzle that's cropped up in my research.
I was tracing part of the Sudbury family of Ilkeston, Derbyshire, in particular Mary Sudbury b circa 1850/4 in Sligo Ireland. In tracing her to the 1911 census, her son John Thomas (34) is HEAD and they are living at 7 Tutin St, Ilkeston, she being classed 'widow'. Her son Francis 28 & daughter Ellen 25 are also at that address. Now comes the strange part. Also listed as 'son' are Wm Gaffney 35 & Ian Gaffney 28 also of Ilkeston. I've tried running back traces on their names but can't find anything that explains this census entry.
Going back through time she seems to have been married to her late husband, Thomas c 1846 of Ilkeston and wasn’t married to anyone else called Gaffney?
Any ideas where these Gaffney’s fit in, or it was a mistake by the census taker?
All advice gratefully received.
