At long last. I have been travelling then got ill.Thanks for all information.
I am trying to find out about Alexander's early life. All the details after he was convicted are well documented. The puzzle is how did he get such a good education and learn so much about music? He believed to be the first Australian composer whose tunes still exist.
Have I identified the right parents?
Also five of his children have disappeared. Does anyone know the whereabouts of John b c 1816, Alexander b 21819, James b 1820, Ellen Laing who married William Roberts & William b 1830.

Yes I do know the book & I helped Peter MacFie with details about Alexander's life.
Yes that chr is one of the possibilities I am working with & herein lies the problem. There is another chr on the same date in Kirktown of Mortach Alexander the natural son of John Laing of Tannadice & Anne Stuart of Kirktown (Old Parish Records) . Unfortunately the Kirk Session records are missing for both places. Are Anne Stuart & Anne Forbes the same person? Looking at the Stuart history 1749 Anne Gibb was chr at Keith the dau of John Gibb & Margaret Stuart. The parents did not marry & Anna was often known as Stuart. 1775 Anne Forbes was born the dau of James Forbes & Anna Gibb. The parents did not marry & Anna Forbes/Stuart went away to work & became pregnant in 1791. Alexander was born in 1792.
The questions are is it possible to have a chr on the same day in places 80 km apart and is Anne Stuart Anne Forbes?

Does anyone have any info to share about Alexander Laing's daughter Georgina Jane Laing b 1827? The info I have found is confusing - she married a John Hartell in 1848 and/or a Richard Meredith in 1850 (or a combination of the two according to stuff posted on IGI?). Did she have a son Richard Charles Meredith b Sorell in 1850? - if so she is my husband's great great grandmother.

I don't have access to Australian records so would be really grateful for any info.
