Thanks everyone for all the information. I have checked and rechecked and am sure that the James Clouton/Clayton and wife Emma are my gr.gr.grandparents and that they did go to live in Yorkshire 1881 census. What happened after that, I don't know and probably won't be able to find out. If you don't know the approximate year of death, its not possible to get a death certificate, without spending a fortune. The other James Clouton c1821 who married a Martha (Perry) is the cousin of my James c1824. As with lots of families, they tend to use similar names and so it adds to the confusion when trying to sort out particular families. However my line starts with Joseph c1760, to his son William, c2783, to James c1824, to Ellen c1849, Frank c1884, to my mother Gladys 1917. My gr.grandmother, had a sister and a brother. Julia married William Lambden and Alfred married Julia Esther Choppen.

A move from Essex to Yorkshire and a change of occupation from an agricultural labourer to a railway worker at the age of 47+ sounds slightly unusual.

Are you 100% certain that it is your Gt Gt Grandparents in both the 1871 and 1881 census records?

James and Emma were my gr.gr.grandparents. James born c1824 in Stebbing, Essex and Emma born c1828 Felsted, Essex. They lived in Felsted, Essex at first, having 3 children. In 1871 they had moved to Hatfield Peveril, Essex. James was an agricultural labour. However by 1881 James and Emma had moved to Yorkshire, living at 127 Wortley Road, Kimberworth, York where James was described as a railway worker.

I can't find them in 1891, so its possible they might have moved on, or maybe have died. Any ideas or suggestions please. Susan
