Records for soldiers that served from 1920 upto now are only available to those soldiers or their next of kin

Hi, sorry we have no details, these are from Medals found after a relative's death and we are trying to trace how they came by them, hopeing to find they could be relatives.

Hi Teresa, Need to tell you that it is possible these records are available on Ancestry. Both are fairly common names and I have had a first look with not much results. I need to go do stuff but will be back this evening and I will look more.

The other option you might like to try if you haven't already is to google the regiments. Some of the military establishments have search functions where you can put in the name and you will find information. Of course you could also contact the historians of these regiments in the same way and ask if they have any information.

It is good that your search is from medals because there are also medal card searches which can be done.
I will catch you later.

For Edward Elliott.

I had a look on the medal cards so add to Kevin's post.

There are two medals listed on the card
Victory - with CY/108.B page 709 written next to it

the word British on the next line with "do" (ditto) next to it.

then
Star CY/1/B3 page 171.

Wondering if the medals are "Victory" and "British Star"

Theatre of War first served in has next to it (3) Egypt.

Date of entry 9.8.15
Then underneath Disemb: 20.4.19

I have had a look through the Ancestry records for Edward Elliott but no matches for anything like the service numbers.

In the First World War the 1/1st Sherwood Rangers served in Egypt as cavalry. In 1915 it was despatched to Gallipoli performing an infantry role and served as such for three months, receiving the "King's Colour" in recognition of its gallantry. The Regiment then returned to Egypt as cavalry, serving thereafter in North Greece and Palestine, taking part in the great cavalry advance from Gaza to Aleppo. The Sherwood Rangers won 13 battle honours for the First World War. The 2/1st Sherwood Rangers remained in Britain throughout the war, initially as part of the 2/2nd Mounted Division later as bicycle troops.

Neither of them come up in casualty lists or on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site. This means they may have survived the war.

Lots and lots and lots of J. Griffiths. Some belong to the South Wales Boarderers, however nothing matches the given Regimental Number.

The South Wales borderers have a web site with a facility for tracing personnel belonging to the regiment. Might be worth a query.

8 pages of J Griffiths (of various names) on below Records, Find My Past. some of that Regiment...bit of a task without rough idea of birth, would need to read each one, and see if number, next of kin or family names tie up, or ring a bell!.
Good luck with that one.

AuntySherlock Report 4 Sep 2011 07:49

Well done jansmith and Kevin. They were a very good finds. Gives us a base to work from.

I have done a comprehensive search of Ancestry military records for John Griffiths without success. There are plenty of matches for him so I searched by regimental number and name of regiment.

As I said before I think making enquiries of the regiments would be the next step.

Teresa, You might like to try this site. I came across it by accident a few days ago. It is easy to access however it is a pay to use site. Perhaps if you took out a month's subs that should be sufficient for you to see what is there.

The initial search facility will tell you there are service personnel WW1 that you are researching however you need the subs to look further.
