Thanks for info. I had wondered whether she was married to John or just using his name but with the mistranscription and the marriage above it seems they did. I will see if I can locate anything more with the correct Whettenhall name. Re the father of William, I might have to see if I can get the cert if I cannot trace the earlier marriage.

The childrens name are different probably because Sarah remarried after they where born and they kept the Chapman name.
Lookingf at the original 1861 census image the surname has been mistranscribed and should be Whettenhall.

What is Williams Dads name on his M/C

Hi. Looking for more info on the parents of my ancestor William Chapman. Here they are in the 1861 census which is the only place I have been able to find them. I have no idea why the children have different surnames to the parents. I cannot see either parent on any earlier census under any variation of the surname that I can think of, nor can I find anything any later. I have William later but by then he is married with children. I also could not find deaths for them either.

I am also looking for more details on family of Mary Fox (William's wife who he married in Altrincham in 1867) I would like to find details of her parents. The 1871 census shows she was born in Ireland so not sure if she came over alone or with her parents. It seems she might have previously been married as there are step-children for William shown as John Fox b. 1855 and Thomas Fox b. 1864 (both in Lancashire). Mary & William went on to have Mary b. 1868 in Chesire and Ann b. 1870 also in Cheshire.
