mgnv...Thank you for the backround history of the area..To me this is what Genealogy/Family History is all about...not names on pieces of paper!!
Unfortunately/fortunately once you find out something new you end up diversifying into the social and historical .....the journey can be endless...however it does give a wonderful insight into the lives people led...
What I have read so far supports what you regarded as an eyesore some 30yrs ago...apparently its still an eyesore..!!

Yeah, it's not the most visited state in the union. Although it's technically a neighbouring state, it's 900 km to the MT state line, and then another 500km to Butte. I've only been to Butte the once, and that was 30+ y ago. Part of the state is agricultural, mostly wheat growing and beef cattle on the prairies, I guess. In the rockies around Butte, it's mostly mining. Initially, it was gold and silver like every place in the west (hence Silver Bow Co), but this got worked out. Around the turn of the century, when cities started electrification, they really got into copper. I see from 1881, the menfolk were hard-rock iron ore miners, so that's why they came to the US, I guess. Thru the 1950s, they would mine veins of copper, but then the veins got played out. Abt 40km from here, half way to Whistler, was the Britania copper mine - in it's heyday, it was the largest copper mine in the Empire, but it's now a mining museum - you get to ride a few hundred yards into the mine and they have demos set up of various bits of machinery. Next to the mine entrance, there's a refining building built from the ground to partways up a mountain side. They do tours of this too, explaining how they feed ore in at the top of the building, process it as it wends its way down the building/mountain, and get copper ingots out the bottom.

After the veins in Butte played out, they started an open pit mine to get lower grade ore just N of town - I say just N, but actually it gobbled up the north end of Butte - it's a huge pit - even the freeway has to detour around it. It's shut down now, and a huge environmental disaster. The water flooding the pit is highly acidic, and leaches out all sorts of heavv metals from the rock, and is threatening to get into the local groundwater supply. I've only just read the last bit, but 30+ y ago, it was definitely an eyesore. The price of progress, I suppose, although one could always inflict it on some 3rd world S American country and cure the problem (locally).

Many Thanks mgnv...! I am still stuck chasing around in Butte Mt...Well you were right about Cath Mulholland (Katie) she went over in 1892...only 15 at the time...Beggars belief the journey's they made ....Never been familiar with that part of the States but I am learning fast...
The Burns O'Briens and Mulholland's continue to be interlinked ....until abt 20 years ago an O'Brien aunt was actually living in the house the Mulhollands lived in ...

Thank you again for all your help.

From your info re dual surnames, this would seem to be your mob:

1881 Household:

Elizabeth MULHOLLAND Wife M Female 35 Isle of Man, England
Alice MULHOLLAND Dau Female 9 Cleator, Cumberland, England Scholar
Catherine MULHOLLAND Dau Female 4 Cleator, Cumberland, England
Mary MULHOLLAND Dau Female 1 Cleator, Cumberland, England

Terrance BURNS (MULHOLLAND) Stepson U Male 16 Ulverston, Lancashire, England Lab In Iron Mine
John BURNS (MULHOLLAND) Stepson U Male 11 Isle of Man, England

Census Place Cleator, Cumberland, England

So I guess this is son Dennis with mum in 1871

Dennis Burns name abt 1841 Ireland relation city, Cumberland
Eliza Burns name abt 1843 Isle of Man relation city, Cumberland
Edwa Burns name, name abt 1859 city, Cumberland, England relation city, Cumberland
Dennis Burns name, name abt 1862 city, Cumberland, England relation city, Cumberland
Laurence Burns name, name abt 1864 Isle of Man relation city, Cumberland
Eliza J Burns name, name abt 1868 Isle of Man relation city, Cumberland
John A Purns[Burns] name, name abt 1869 Isle of Man relation city, Cumberland
Isaac Hagon abt 1853 city, Cumberland, England relation city, Cumberland

[also on same page]
Margt Burns abt 1846 Ireland relation city, Cumberland
Mary Burns abt 1869 city, Cumberland, England relation city, Cumberland

I don't have a sub to see details, but the census ref is rg10/5261/82/85.

OK, so this is Thos + Liz's marr:

Marriages Mar 1876 (>99%)
Burns Eliza Whitehaven 10b 884
Cassidy William John Whitehaven 10b 884
Mulholland Thomas Whitehaven 10b 884
Quigley Mary Whitehaven 10b 884

and maybe this is Dennis Snr (but I was expecting a=32)

Deaths Mar 1873 (>99%)
Burns Dennis 39 Whitehaven 10b 433

so is this Dennis again? - it doesn't really tie in with your MS=Montgomery unless there's a 3rd marr for her:

Marriages Mar 1860 (>99%)
Benson Rosanna Whitehaven 10b 629
Burns Dennis Whitehaven 10b 629
Cowen William Whitehaven 10b 629
Cubin Eliza Whitehaven 10b 629

So I suppose Alice isn't hers.

Births Mar 1872 (>99%)
Mulholland Alice Whitehaven 10b 600

Thos Snr + Henry stick around thru 1901 rg13/4895/92/51
In 1891, they're both with Alice, Kath & Mary rg12/4317/86/9 (at least so far as I can tell).

Colin...Yes thank you I have looked at thesite for the grave and found Mary's headstone ..very nice it is too...

mgnv..I think you may be right !! The family created complex relationships ..
Thomas Mulholland snr. was married and widowed twice prior going to Butte..both wives named Eliz..his second wife Elizabeth Montgomery (Burns) had children from a previous marriage and some of the children married into the O'Briens'...The "Burns" stepchildren of Thomas used either surname..
Thomas'brother Richard was married to Jane Burns sister -in-law to Eliz.

It was sheer chance I found the info.re Michael and Mary ..what a headache its causing..!!

You can search US censuses, etc (and view some images) at:
https://www.familysearch.org/s/collection/list#page=1®ion=NORTH_AMERICA

1900 image is linked.
For 1920 (sim 1930) look up on FS, note that the last 3 #s on the film match those on the NARA reel #, then look up at:
http://www.archive.org/details/1920_census
Guess a page # (the # after the /n - see 1910s below), look up at FS a name on that page, and adjust the page #.

1910's a bit too geeky as FS doesn't give enough source info. Also 1890 was 99.9% destroyed by fire. Here's 1910:

I would appreciate if anyone who has access to the above Census could try and locate Michael O'Brien b1877 Cumberland England.
He travelled to Butte City along with his wife Mary b.1880 Cumb and son Thomas H.b 1898 Cumb.in 1899.
Family Search does show Mary living with 4 children in Anacondra? Silver Bow Butte 1910...she is shown as "head" but no other details.
I cannot find Michael....

I have also located a 2nd marriage of Mary Feb 1913 (also from FS) to an Albert E Duff (Silver Bow) however it looks from the image as if Mary was stated to be "Divorced"..the image is very difficult to read....

Mary OBrien Duff Nee Mulholland subsequently died Jan 1914....and is buried in Silver Bow.
Thank you.
