I wonder if anyone can help me with this one please, I have a marriage cert for a Robert Beckford and a Mary Buchanan. I am currently trying to trace Marys side of the family back and her father is listed as John Buchanan. I have located what I think are Marys family on the census of 1871, 1881 and 1891 but John is listed as Christopher ?! I suppose it could have been a middle name or something but what I am really keen to find is his birth record or marriage record. I believe he was born in Scotland roughly 1821 and his wife is Eleanor ? Any help would be most appreciated.

It looks as if Christopher/John was born before registration started in Scotland so you may not find his birth, and since his wife gives her birthplace as Lancashire, perhaps they married in Lancashire.

What is Robert's father's name on the marriage certificate? It isn't John, too, is it? I have sometimes heard of a vicar copying the same first name for both fathers or for father and groom, just because of lack of concentration when filling out the certificate.

Meant a second marriage because of the difference in his age and gaps in the ages of the children. Looks like his first wife Jane had died after 1861.

EDIT - sorry that should read that his first wife died between 1851 and 1854.

It just says labourer. The witnesses are John Buchanan and Elizabeth Jane Buchanan.
