I've discovered that my ancestor, George Wallis bapt 11.02.1816 appeared to have had twins, Frederick and Walter both bapt 13.07.1851 but both died in infancy.
I believed George's parents were John (bapt 07.07.1791) and Elizabeth Terry who were married on 20.03.1815. I believe I have incorrectly sourced baptisms of John's siblings as some were baptised within a few months of each other eg Sarah bapt 13.11.1791. Another Sarah bp 30.03.1794 and James bp 24.08.1794 then another John bp 17.09.1797 and Susannah bp 23.03.1797. I think I may have attributed too many siblings to John's parents, William Wallis and Sarah Mais. Can anyone put me right, please?

Help, please. I've obtained a copy of the Writtle Registers for the period when I expected John to have been born and now I'm stymied because I'm almost certain that I've got the wrong John Wallis as George's father.

Other family trees give John baptized either in 1791 or 1797 as the father of George. However, the Baptism Register shows three Johns born to parents William & Sarah Wallis (nee Mais/Mays) so even the William and Sarah connection may be wrong. I don't think a third son would have been named John unless the first two had died.

John No. 1 baptized 07.07.1791

John No. 2 baptized 17.09.1797

John No. 3 baptized 10.07.1808

There is another John in the Baptism Register - baptized 01.12.1806, son of John & Etty.

George's baptism took place on 11.02.1816 and his wedding certificate (27.02.1841) gives his father's name as John Wallis dec'd. I don't believe that either of the Johns baptized in 1806 or 1808 could have been old enough to have George baptized in 1816 and the Register gives no indication that either of these two Johns was an older child at the time of baptism.

Can anyone help me to identify which John was George's father, please?

Yes, thank you, the George with spouse Susanna is my George.

His first wife (my ancestor) died as a result of childbirth I believe, after which he married Susanna who already had a son.

Clearly from his marriage certificate his father's name is John (dec'd) but still no further forward regarding which of the Johns is correct if any of them is.

It's almost a year since my last post about John Wallis (father of George) and I've got no further even though I've obtained the Writtle Records of Baptism, Marriages and Burials for the period.

I'm now beginning to wonder whether John Wallis was born elsewhere (other than Writtle) in Essex but was married there at his bride's church.

Some family trees have John Wallis born 1791 and others 1797 but according to the baptism records there were three Johns born to William and Sarah - 1791, 1797 and 1808 - and I don't think the one couple would name three sons John unless the preceding one had died ..... unless there were two Williams and Sarahs around at Writtle during the period, but I've not come across any.

Can anyone shed any light on my elusive ancestor, please?

Hi Maddie,

It's John Wallis's son, George with his wife Mary Ann Day (aka Barnard).

Mary Ann has a curious background too. I have the marriage certificate which gives her name as Mary Ann but I have a couple of birth certificates of their children in which she gives her maiden name as Barnard.

I'm on the trail of an Essex Day/Barnard marriage and I think I've found one. I'm not certain but I believe Mary Ann's mother was either a Barnard by birth (making Mary Ann illegitimate) and Mary Ann adopted her stepfather's surname for marriage or whether Mary Ann was the daughter of a man with the surname Barnard whose wife (Mary Ann's mother) married Mr Day after the death of husband number 1.

It's intriguing.

Many thanks,

Joyce

Looking through the Writtle parish registers there's a burial for John Wallis 6th September 1833 (aged 36) and an Elizabeth Wallis 22nd July 1827 (aged 30)

That would be mean these were both born c.1797. The burial records aren't terribly informative, so I don't know if these two are even related, but there's a chance they could be George's parents. In which case things would point to George's father being the John Wallis who was baptised in 1797 (son of William and Sarah).

I agree with you that it looks like there's more than one William and Sarah around.

There's a baptism for an Elizabeth Terry 6th May 1796 (dau. of John & Sarah).

This would have made her 31 years old in July 1827, but only a year out.

It's possible that Elizabeth took a year off her age so it wouldn't be known that she was a year older than her husband. For whatever bizarre reason, wives being younger than their husbands seemed to matter then.

Yes, Christina, I spotted the deaths in the Registers too.

I wondered whether they were my John and Elizabeth. If she was my Elizabeth then her youngest child was only one year at the mother's death. Sad times for many then.

I can't find another William and Sarah around in Writtle (where it was assumed that John was born) during that period though. The family could have been moved to Writtle after marriage though - where John married Elizabeth.

I have a note on mine that Sarah was said to be from Margaretting at the time of her marriage to William Wallis and she was interred there on 17 Sept. 1826 - but is she the right Sarah? The only thing I have not checked was if there was a John Wallis born at Margaretting where Sarah the mother came from - that would be my last resort, I guess.

I don't know why I did not think of the Margaretting connection before.

Thanks,

Joy
