actually the site address I posted but which disappeared (I did check it was there after I'd submitted the message!), is the following

www.familysearch.org/#form=advanced-records

the one that PH gave you leads to the screen before the one I always go to ........ it leads to basic search rather than directly to Advanced Search.

To avoid confusion, it might be in your best interest to start another thread regarding the Parker/Miller side of your family.
Please include dates and places of birth and exactly what information you are looking for. Good luck...........PH.

also try this site .... it's the site run by the Mormons, but this one of their sites allegedly has only records taken from actual parish reocrds.

You may well find it invaluable aas you get back beyond 1900.

According to a tree on ancestry Thoma Elwell married Mary Harper in 1890. Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. BUT there is no documentary evidence as proof!

Thomas Elwell
1869 – 1949

Mary Harper
1870 – 1934

The easiest and fastest way to find out if anyone on GR has any of these names in their trees is to click on the Search Trees button, in the very dark green band above.

That will lead you directly to any trees which do contain these names, and then you can contact the tree owners.

The chance of anyone connected to your family just wandering by these boards is very slim

what you do get by posting on the Community Boards is the incalcubale help of the superb helpers on this site ......... members like yourself but with more experience and access to other sites.

You order birth etc certificates from the following site, and ONLY the following site! You will see sites such as GR, ancestyr etc offering "get certificates", but they charge much more!.

All certificates cost £9.25 each

You have to register with this site, but it is free.

www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

You might also want to look at some of the following sites

www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

This carries records from July 1 1837 (when registration began), and sometimes has mother's maiden name before mid-1911

www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html

This carries records taken from the parish records, and is part of the Online Parish Records (opc) organisation

Hi, Sorry my dad was born in Walsall.
I've looked at my dad's Birth and Baptism certificate and it doesn't give a middle name for his father James however the home address in 1925 was 62 Oxford St, Pleck and James' profession was a Metal Turner. I know James and his mother and father are all buried at James Bridge Cemetary in Walsall. What confuses me is on the headstone it's got his name as James Thomas Elwell so can only assume this is correct until I find differently.

James' father on the headstone is down as Thomas Elwell when he lost his wife Mary but when he died it says John Thomas Elwell. I found the death record and he's recorded down as Thomas Elwell only.

This all makes it very difficult to know whether what I find is the correct record or not.

The reference Volume 6b Page 564 I found. Do you know how I go about getting a copy of the actual certificate and what do they charge as I believe it can be quite expensive? Is there cheaper ways?

My sister and I are planning to go to Walsall on the 4th October for the day to try and see if we can find any more information (however we are not looking for just the Elwells). We live in North Wales.

I can't see a birth entry for a James "Thomas" Elwall.

It does not give a middle initial on his marriage entry or his death entry.......

Thanks I'll concentrate on the Elwells first then.

The information I have is as follows:

John Thomas Elwell married to Mary (who died 11/04/1934) in Walsall
John DOB approx 1869 and Died 15/07/1949
I would like to know the names of the other siblings to John if possible.

Son of the above
James Thomas Elwell married to Sarah Elizabeth Bassett (in 1917)
James DOB approx 1892 and Died 16/07/1927
I would like to know the names of the other siblings to James as I can remember my dad referring to an Uncle who wanted to adopt him because he himself only had daughters and wanted to leave his factory to them or something like that. This Uncle could have been Sarah's brother of course which I have her sisters and brother's names but I got the impression from my dad it was an Elwell.

My Dad Stephen Dennis Elwell DOB 27/12/1924 was married to Joan Miller (on 13/03/1948).

Thanks.

First advice then is post the info you want, the year and place etc

Keep it nice and succinct so it doesnt confuse things, one thing a time is good, we can move onto the other things later

Some of us have access to parish records so before you go spending at the GRO give us a go!

Hi Ginny
Thanks for the welcome.

Basically I'm trying to trace back the generations of my mum and dad's families. Finding births was easier for the 1900's because it gives mother's maiden name but for the 1800's I'm finding it very diifficult. I was hoping by giving the names that some one might have these in their trees and could pass on information to me. I think I'm at the stage whereby I maybe need copies of certificates to gather more information. However as a novice any advise is welcomed.

Hi Susan

What is it you would like help with?

If you need help you will have to be specific, include dates and places and also tell us what you have already found, ie BMDs/censuses

Forgot to say, welcome to the community boards

Susan Report 10 Sep 2011 16:23

I've recently started to research my family tree.
Elwell/Bassett - My father was Stephen Dennis Elwell who married Joan Miller, his father was James Thomas Elwell who married Sarah Elizabeth Bassett (I have a copy of the 1911 census for when Sarah was still at home) and James' father was John Thomas Elwell who married Mary (maiden name unknown). My father had two sisters Doreen and Olive Dorothy.
Miller/Parker - My mother's father was Samuel Joseph Miller who married Mary Ann Rosina Parker. The other siblings are Elsie, Fred, Mary and Edwin.
If anyone has any information which could help me please could you get in touch as I would appreciate any assistance. It would also be nice to get in contact with any family members. :-)
