Peter Report 11 Oct 2011 14:34

Hi there, essentially I am looking for a Mrs Mallaby and a Mrs Edwards in the 1901/1911 census, possibly living in Chapel Yard, Guisborough.

This information is taken from an asylum patient casenote that I found last week. The patient is Thomas Swales (1822-1909) who died in the Clifton Asylum, York. I have looked for Thomas in the census previously and he is fairly difficult to track, but managed to trace him through the help of people on here. I am not looking for him in the census but his next of kin, Mrs Mallaby and Mrs Edwards who were described as living in Chapel Yard, Guisborough when he was sectioned in 1899. I assume they are his daughters. I can see no relevent Swales marriages on an inital search so I am wondering if someone could have a spot for them in the census. For clarity, here is Thomas in 1881/1891 and 1901 but let me stress I am not looking for any further information on him.

Thanks,

Peter

Have you looked for marriages for the SWALES daughters.............on freebmd.........to eliminate any (or all) of them?

Peter

Peter Report 11 Oct 2011 14:51

Hi and thank you - I have looked for the marriages of the daughters but they are quite difficult to find. I do find that sometimes relatives do just seem to disappear.

Also, thank you for the list Flick - none of the birthplaces seem to jump out though! Grrr ... thank you though!

And Sophia Hannah Mallaby - not sure. The Swales family were hawkers/tinners/general dealers and labourers, so not sure one of them would be living with a school teacher. I could be wrong of course.

Thank you

Of course, the women who committed him to the asylum may not have been directly related.

Where was his wife at this time?

Peter

Peter Report 11 Oct 2011 14:58

Hi Flick, I know - I have only ASSUMED Mrs Edwards and Mrs Mallaby are his daughters, as their relationship to Thomas is not stated. That and the fact, there are Swales relatives of mine living in Chapel Yard in the 1891/1901 and 1911. Also, I don't where his wife went, or if they were actually married as I can't find a marriage. I think the Swales were a little before their time, for as a collective community, they often flouted many of the traditional conventions of the day.

Wow thanks - Flick RE the 1911 - beleive it or not, but the Francis Swales/Christiana Swales were actually distant cousins of Christiana Swales (parents Thomas and Charlotte). So, that is not her marriage as I can already account for that record.

However, I am currently emailing the register office over the Smith-Swales marriage.

Wow Choccy - you seem to have found one of the informants! Thanks ... is she still alive in 1911?

Thank you

Hmmmm unusal! I have emailed regarding the Applegarth-Edwards marriage asking if Christiana was a widow and daughter of Thomas.

Thanks

Christiana Edwards in 1911 - she married Arthur Peary in the second quarter of 1911. Looks like she was unrelated to the Swales - she appears to be the daughter of Charlotte -

Wow that would explain where Charlotte disappeared too! But Christiana was born a Swales - maybe she reverted to her mother's name after some disagreement with her father Thomas Swales?! Very complicated - I did warn they did not conform to social expectations!

Thanks again.

Peter

Peter Report 11 Oct 2011 16:22

Christiana Peary then married Albert Allgood in 1919 and died in 1926.

Charlotte Baxter died in 1913.

It seems this is Bessie's marriage under the name APPLEGARTH (can she be found in 1911)?

Hey, I was in Leeds today Sue, Err yes I suppose that seems a very likely match, especially with the address. Hmmm, why didn't these documents contain more information? Arrr.

Also, checked the birth record for Christiana Swales, daughter of a Thomas and Charlotte, but Charlotte's maiden name was NOT Appelgarth ... this birth was in Middlesbrough in 1868 so I am stumped.
