We traced my grandmother's father by finding a bastardy order - as they were then called - in the archives. It was in the records of the assizes. If you're anywhere near the record office in question it may be worth a look there.

No I don't know if he remarried, although I suppose if Annie did die in 1940 I suppose there was no reason why he would not have remarried

Flick, Thanks, I also found this but I was a bit nervous about adding it because I have there marriage cert and they actually got married in 1909, Ellen was born in June 1906 so depending on when the census was done she was either 4 or 5, I also have her birth cert and her father isn't named and she has her mothers maiden name

tempest Report 31 Oct 2011 19:33

several trees on ancestry would suggest Alfred Ayton born about 1886 had a middle name of Ernest

There are no deaths on CWGC for female civilians named Ayton

I wouldn't hold out much hope of your finding out the fathers' names, unless some sort of claim for maintenance was pursued by the mother(s)

Both my grandfather and grandmother on my mothers side are illegitimate, Gilbert Reginald Haynes was born in 1908 at 28 Marloes Rd Kensington which was a workhouse, Emma May Haynes was his mothers maiden name, she was born c1890 she went onto marry George Osborne in 1911.
My Grandmother Ellen Rosina Harrington was born in 1906 to an Annie Harrington in what I think was part of the lock hospital in London (289 Harrow Rd) she was born c 1888 and went onto marry Alfred Ayton in 1909, I have also been told she died in the Blitz in London in 1940 but I can't find any records, can anyone help please :-S
