Thanks to everyone who has replied. Sorry I had to leave the PC for a while as I'm in the middle of moving house. Flick, his mother was irish and came from Kings County.

Thanks Roy for your information regarding the Framce connection.

Denise, in answer to your question why would a scottish person move to France for work during this tim period

During the 19th century, railway construction began in France with short mineral lines. The building of the main French railway system did not begin until after 1842,

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_rail_transport_in_France

And i think that they employed british labour to help build the railways in france so Blacksmiths and their skills would be required

is the question who his father was ? the Scottish marriage certificate should show the parents' information

it can be viewed for a reasonable price at

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

I did the search of statutory marriage records and the marriage shows as 1868 but I do not have credits to see the results

Flick Report 9 Nov 2011 22:38

What was the father's name?

Have you any proven facts about him?

Why do you think he was Scottish, if you haven't found any records for him?

Have you found any of the family in Dundee before 1861?

Denise

Denise Report 9 Nov 2011 13:40

I can't seem to find a borth for the father? But they seem to have lived in Dundee then moved to france and then back to Dundee again

Flick

Flick Report 9 Nov 2011 13:28

Was the father actually born in Scotland?

I see that the mother was Irish.............

And there are quite a few children of similar ages on the Scottish censuses who were born in France to Irish parents.............

I wonder whether the Irish potato famine has any bearing on this............it started in 1845

Denise

Denise Report 9 Nov 2011 13:27

I know, its a mystery the father never appears in any of the census returns?

Flick

Flick Report 9 Nov 2011 13:23

Sorry...........Find My Past

I forget that not everyone is familiar with all of the sites.

Flick

Flick Report 9 Nov 2011 13:22

The mother says in 1871 that she's a Blacksmith's wife......but no sign of her husband in either 1861 or 1871

Denise

Denise Report 9 Nov 2011 13:20

Flick, I know this sounds stupid but what is FMP?

Denise

Denise Report 9 Nov 2011 13:19

Thars correct Margee. Flick, I think his father was a Blacksmith? I'm not sure if they had work for iron workers in France at that time? I'm thinking Shipyards just because Dundee was a Shipyard port at that time?

Thanks

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 9 Nov 2011 13:17

I see, according to the 1861 Scotland census his older sister, Margaret was also born in France in 1845.

Flick

Flick Report 9 Nov 2011 13:16

FMP has overseas births.............

As for why the person moved...........it's anyone's guess

What was his occupation?

Denise

Denise Report 9 Nov 2011 13:08

Can anyone help? Does anyone know how I can search for a french birth of a British Citizen in 1846? Also why would a scottish person move to France for work during this tim period? The person I am looking for is Daniel Davie born 1846 in France.

Thanks
