Hi all
Trying to track down a man named charles william bond who was born in ireland in 1861 and he married a ellen wilson nee o'sullivan in 1886 in india . He was a lift engineer, and they eventually returned to london and lived in the wandsworth area. I have found ellen bond on the 1911 census living with two of her children but no sign of charles william and it doesnt say she was a widow. Just wondering if anyone can spot a death or a possible in the 1911 census at aLL???
HOPEFULLY
SHIRLEY

Looks like brummiejan found him in 1911. It's quite possible the head of household filled in the form and didn't know he was married.

Thanks everyone, looks like you found him in 1911, wonder if he fell out with ellen or was just working away from home on census night. Maybe should get that death certificate to check out if it was him??? Would have an address at least then . ?? The rumour was he changed his name by deed poll to william brand, but think that was not strictly true, not sure. But then he would not have a registered death under the old name i suppose???
Ellen had married george wilson in india , and he died in 1879, so we are not certain wether after edward and arthur and kathleen , who were wilsons, were bond children before they, ellen and charles william got married in 1884. Charles alfred anyway is defiantely Charles William bond's son, but uncertain about william henry.
Thanks everyone anyway for all your help and info, youve been fantastic as usual.

Hi again all
We are going to get the certificate of death for the charles william bond in 1933, but the strange thing is, ellen bond died in 1928 and on her death certificate she is down as a widow. So it has caused some confusion. But maybe she was not aware of exactly where he was maybe if they separated ??? There was some talk of him changing his name to william brand, but maybe if he did this, he didnt do it by deed poll, and so that is the reason he had to be registered as still charles william bond on his death certificate???
thanks again. if anyone has any ideas they will be more than welcome.

You are allowed to call yourself whatever you like as long as it's not for illegal purposes. That was so then, and now. I doubt he would have changed his name by deed poll as that would have been an unnecessary expense.

I hope the death cert clears it up for you. The person who was the informant for his death would have to know his name was Bond.

Shirley says the death certificate was not the right person ( can you say how you are sure ? )

I wondered about leaving the country ... this passenger record would fit ?

BOND? Charles W 1862 M 1912 Liverpool USA New York

he does seem to have used his middle name consistently so seeing the middle initial is a good match

( the '?' seems to mean it isn't clear ... perhaps someone with findmypast access will have a look at the record )

passenger transcript details
Name: Charles W BOND?
Date of departure: 12 October 1912
Port of departure: Liverpool

Passenger destination: New York, USA

Date of Birth: 1862 (calculated from age)
Age: 50
Marital status:

No I think this has been transcribed incorrectly as there are a few more letters after his name like "strum" and every person on that page origanates from Sweden

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 28 Nov 2011 01:51

that's one down then :-)

name is too common to check outgoing passengers well without looking at every one and hoping for an occupation ... especially if he was only using initials for instance ...

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 28 Nov 2011 01:55

couple of possible Brands ...

BRAND Chas Unknown M 1911 Liverpool Canada Halifax
BRAND C W Unknown M 1934 London China Hong Kong
BRAND C W Unknown M 1939 London China Hong Kong

but again ... all the ones with initial C, no initial, no birthdate ......................

I wonder about children's marriage certificates, whether they might say 'deceased' at any point

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 28 Nov 2011 02:08

curious about that 1933 death though

Charles W Bonds born 1860 to 1864

Births Jun 1861
Bond Charles William Gravesend 2a 314
Deaths Sep 1910 ?
Bond Charles W 39 Bromley 2a 256

Births Mar 1861
BOND Charles William Warminster 5a 149
Deaths Mar 1935 ?
Bond Charles W 73 Warminster 5a 159

Births Sep 1863
BOND Charles William Macclesfield 8a 127
Deaths Jun 1936
Bond Charles W 73 Macclesfield 8a 193

that leaves the 1933 death unaccounted for by a birth in England/Wales ... and it is not in a completely unexpected area ...

curious how it was ruled out ... he could have had a partner who signed as wife even if she wasn't ?

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 28 Nov 2011 08:49

I agree with Chrissie - please say why you have discounted that death so we can be sure it really is the wrong one. I wouldn't be too hung up on his wife being described as widow in 1928 - if they had parted years before it is quite possible nobody knew what became of him.

Have you checked out the address on her death cert on the electoral register?

Did a quick check for a Charles W. Brand death just in case the family story is correct, only found this - age a bit far out - and I think there is likely to be a corresponding birth, see below:

Name: Charles W Brand
Birth Date: abt 1856
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1935
Age at Death: 79
Registration district: Edmonton
Inferred County: Middlesex
Volume: 3a
Page: 813

Births Jun 1856 (>99%)
Brand Charles William Linton 3b 497
