Many thanks for the link to the Mitchell Library, it was through them that my cousin and I got a lead once before that lead to us finding the married names of some of the female members of the family, we found a family grave for our Great Grand parents and on the stone it recorded the internment of the ashes of their 3 daughters - giving us their married names.

Hi BatMansDaughter

I have the Scottish census information and the IGI listings, even the information about the address 25 St Vincent Cres & on the 1891 70 St Vincent Cres gives me the circumstantial evidence I need as Johns brother lived at 68 St Vincent at one time and owned several properties in the area.

Perhaps I could prove the connection if I could find out who owned the property since I haven't been able to find a marriage in Scotland or America despite lots of people searching for me.

Any Ideas how I could find out who owned the properties in 1881/1891

Thanks

Veronica

Thanks MarieCeleste

Its unfortunate that the early US census don't show relationships as I found when I looked it up on Ancestry. I have followed the McMillans back on FamilySearch finding marriages and births that tie the family in and gave me a ton of information that connects the family to the US one and gives me information about names etc. Following the Scottish naming convention of using maiden names I even found Elizabeth's mother Julia and Williams marriage. All circumstantial.

By the way W B is William Brown Mcmillan and occurs in many subsequent children in the family also on the Macdougall side - if you google William Brown Macdougall who would have been John Macdougalls nephew up will pop a lot of work he did as an illustrator. I went to the Kelvingrove Museum this summer and they pulled from storage works they had by him.

If they had married in Scotland then that witness if it had been one of Johns brothers or his sister would have clinched it. Everything I have is circumstantial so I may add it to my tree with notes in capital letters indication that the connection is not proven.

No marriage that I can find (doesn't mean there wasn't one, just not available).
The 1860 census confirms she was already in US:

Name: Elizabeth Mcmillan
Age in 1860: 17
Birth Year: abt 1843
Birthplace: Scotland
Home in 1860: Charleston Ward 2, Charleston, South Carolina
Gender: Female
Post Office: Charleston
Value of real estate:
Household Members:
Name Age
Catherin Nesbit 50
W B Mcmillan 41 < Bootmaker
Julia Mcmillan 41
Elizabeth Mcmillan 17
Janet Mcmillan 15
Margaret Mcmillan 13
Carold Mcmillan 11
John Mcmillan 9
David Mcmillan 2

All McMillans born Scotland except David who was South Carolina. (As was Catherine Nesbit - don't know what her relationship is)

From new thread:

"I need to find on either Scotlands People or in Charleston South Carolina a marriage between John Mcdougall/Macdougall born Dundee 1839 and Eliza/Elizabeth Mcmillan born Glasgow 1840 ish.
They had 9 children, 3 born in the USA. MarieCeleste found them on the 1870 US Census living with a family called McMillan who I think are her parents and siblings.
They appear back on the Glasgow Census in 1881/1891 and the rest of their children are born in Glasgow.
If someone finds them on Scotlands People I would love to know who the witnesses are, that could be a clincher as to whether this is the right family"

followed by:
"I am leaning towards thinking they married in America as on a much later American census I found an immigration date of 1854."

(Advice already given about Scotland's People & credits)

Hi MarieCeleste

That family looks like a very good possibility. Thanks, I will try finding this on Ancestry that way I can look at the relationship between Mcdougal's and Mcmillans. The initial "O" appears as a middle name of one their later childrens names, as does the name David, as does William B and I notice the Mcmillan siblings of this name . . . circumstantial but!

I didn't know that info about the ships lists either . . . I have gone google eyed looking for them, they must have returned before 1873 as Andrew O Mcdougall was born in glasgow that year.

Thanks for your help.

The UK incoming passenger lists on Ancestry only start from 1878, so they must have come back before that.

Thanks to you both for your replies. Sorry not to get back to you sooner. I have included all the information that I have.

I have come up with 3 possible marriages on Familysearch site, my cousin is searching Scotlands people and has ruled out one of them and can find no record of the other 2.

Trying to find McDougal/Macdougall on Ancestry is like Smith and Jones, so many of them.

The US is like Canada (and the UK) - there's no national system for BMDs - it's all handled at the state (province/country) level.

So which state are you asking about?

I am trying to find US birth records or any other records for:

Julia Macdougall born 1865
John Macdougall born 1867
Robert Macdougall born 1871

Parents John Macdougall born Dundee 1839
Elizabeth last name unknown, born Glasgow assume she married in Scotland not USA

They had 9 children the first 3 born in the US the rest born in Glasgow after 1871. I can't find births for the US born or records in shipping lists of them returning to Glasgow.

They all appear on the 1881, 1891 and then some on 1901.

Any help is appreciated
