Have you used to ''search trees'' function to find out?
the chances of someone popping in, seeing this and saying 'yes' are about nil.

@Penny Yes i have use the search function here, there is only one person named Cheryl who has him,but i sent her a message a few weeks ago and not heard back. Yes i also know that its a remote chance that someone who has him in their tree will see this, that's why i also asked for any info ,so that someone who has not got him in their tree might be able to help.
@ allotment I have looked at ancestry and the only one with William Whitfield born 31 May 1820 in their tree that i can find is my cousin and he is just guessing that they are the same..close enough is good enough . I am not like that,i need a definite link between the 2 to add him to my tree, hence my post here, hoping someone can connect the 2. The photo that you mentioned ( a portrait ?) is the one i discovered in the archives of the State Library in South Australia where i live, then uploaded it to Ancestry where everyone else then grabbed it for their tree :-) . As for Mundia i dont know a lot about it,but i seems that the family trees that come up in a search, are just the ones from Ancestry ?? ,not sure is this correct ?? thanks Steve

"Victualler" would be his occupation.
A victualler is traditionally a person who sells food or other provisions, similar to a grocer, and in particular British usage can be used to mean a person licensed to sell alcoholic beverages.
A licensed victualler, a formal name for a the landlord of a public house or similar licensed establishment.

The William Whitfield born 1820 in Shoreditch had siblings Thomas, Henry, Mary, Ellen and Frederick. Was wondering if your William used any of these names when naming his own children.
This William's father was Thomas, he kept a tavern in the City of London. (I got this from the 1851 census, where he's still living with wife Mary, and son Frederick. Also from the apprentice record of his son Thomas).
I've found brothers Thomas, Henry and Frederick on the 1851 census, but can't see a very likely William.

Robert Thomas,Ellen and Henry are names of 3 of the children of my William. No William in the 1851 census sounds promising. thanks Christina

Steve, Are you not able to view the 1848 cert on Ancestry?
They're both of full age and both of York Rd. He's a tobacconist and father Thomas is a Gent. Her father is a licensed victualler.

Hi Maureen Sorry, but i don't know Ancestry too well. I am learning how to use it at this stage, but i have now found the marriage certificate. I'm not sure what to make of it,the only thing i can see that is different between the 2 Williams is there fathers occupation. I'm not up to date with what the occupation of a Gentleman was in them days, but would that mean if he was classed as a Gentleman then he wouldn't be a licensed victualler ??. I remember somewhere that my William that migrated to Australia put his fathers occupation (maybe on his wedding certificate)as a Gentleman also,so would this exclude him from being William from Shoreditch.
thanks Steve
Edit; I have found this William also who had a father as Thomas, but i think Ancestry have made a mistake when interpreting the baptism certificate, they have the year 1820,but the certificate looks like 1840 ,can someone confirm this please...thanks. http://search.ancestry.com.au/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&db=LMAbirths&rank=1&new=1&MSAV=1&msT=1&gss=angs-d&gsfn=william&gsln=whitfield&msbdy=1820&msfng0=thomas&dbOnly=_F00058A6|_F00058A6_x%2c_F0005A49|_F0005A49_x%2c_F0005A5E|_F0005A5E_x&uidh=efc&=b%2cf&pcat=34&fh=0&h=751350&recoff=9+10+37+48+50

If you are unsure of the year showing, then just 'turn' the pages of the book to see what it says on previous entries/images , 1819 or 1839?

If this is the record you mean, the date should be 1840. The DOBs of the children baptised have been written in the left margin, and William's is given as Jan 3 1836. Baptised on the same day with same parents is George, b Jan 12 1840. Address given as Coleman st; no occupation given for father:
Name: William Whitfield Record Type: Baptism Estimated Birth Date: abt 1820 Baptism Date: 23 Feb 1820 Father's Name: Thomas Smith Whitfield Mother's Name: Jane Elizabeth Whitfield Parish or Poor Law Union: St Botolph without Bishopsgate Borough: City of London Register Type: Parish Registers

I do not have any 'gentlemen' in my tree. They could be claiming something that they are not, but gentlemen are not usually tobacconists.
