Hi Eringobragh1916

Can you let me know where you found these records from the early 1700s and whether any similar records exist for this period up to the 1901 census?

I'm trying to track my way back from the mid 1800s in but finding it difficult to find anything that I can nail down to specific areas/relatives....

Many thanks.

Happy New Year All

I've now received the copy birth certificate for the elusive John Thomas Scanlon and as suspected it is the one I was looking except that the surname had been mispelt as Scanlan.

This, together with information provided by Clover has given me confirmation of my grandfather's family and given me the chance to dig alot deeper so many thanks for all of your assistance.

Best regards.

Hi all

Many thanks for all of your assistance, I seem to have finally identified the correct details for my grandfather and great grandfather who appear to be the Ballydoogan, Sligo Scanlons.

After following up the various leads supplied I put in an online request to the GRO for a copy of the birth certificate for "John Thomas Scanlon" born around 1888 whose father was "Martin" and initially they said there was no match.

However, I then provided them with details of a Baptism record I stumbled across a "John Scanlon", son of Martin and Honoria dated 3rd January 1889 and I have received an email confirmation from the GRO stating that they have a copy of a birth certificate for a mispelt "John Scanlan" that matches this additional criteria and are sending it in the post.

So, fingers crossed, it looks a lot like I have finally found the right path as it seems unlikely there would be any others with these forenames whose father's name was Martin (relatively unusual at that time).

I will now be digging deeper to try and find out more about the Scanlons from Sligo in the early-mid 1800s which I suspect will be a bit trickier.

Many thanks for all your help which has saved me a lot of time and effort.

Hope you all have a very merry Christmas.

Best regards.

Hi Paul, did find some of those children and as they married (if right people)with a 7 year gap between the first and second child on census could it be assumed that some of them died in the meantime.
Have found two deaths for a Martin Scanlon, one in 1902 the other in 1910

Betty/RootGatherer

Many thanks for your assistance, from the information provided plus some further investigation I have managed to establish more detail......

In 1901 - living in in Ballydoogan, Kilmacowen, Sligo:

Scanlon Martin 58 Male Head of Family Roman Catholic Co Sligo Gardener
Scanlon Norah (aka Honoria) 53 Female Wife - married (Honoria McGoldrick ) 18 Apr 1869 in Calry,Sligo
Scanlon Mary Ann 16 Jun 1870 31 Female Daughter of Honoria R C Sligo, Co Sligo
Scanlon Pat 02 Mar 1872 29 Male Son of Honoria R C Sligo, Co Sligo
Scanlon Martin 17 Sep 1873 28 Male Son of Honoria R C Sligo, Co Sligo
Scanlon James 29 Nov 1875 25 Male Son of Honoria R C Sligo, Co Sligo Fireman
Scanlon Honoria 15 Aug 1877 24 Female Daughter of Honoria R C St. John, Sligo
Scanlon Joseph Michael 11 Mar 1879 22 Male Son of Honoria R C Finisklin, Sligo
Scanlon Jane (Frances?) 1883 18 Female Daughter R C Co Sligo Dress Maker
Scanlon Margret 1886 15 Female Daughter R C Co Sligo Monitress
Scanlon John 1889 12 Male Son R C Co Sligo Scholar
Scanlon Robert 1892 9 Male Son R C Co Sligo Scholar
Williams Norah 1897 4 Female Cousin R C Co Sligo Scholar

I have managed to track down Nora/Honoria in the 1911 census living at 9 Glengariff Parade, Inn's Quay, Dublin with 3 of the other previous occupants:

Died Scanlon Martin
as 1901 Scanlon Norah 64 Female Head of Family Roman Catholic Sligo Co -

Absent Scanlon Mary Ann 16 Jun 1870 41 Female Daughter of Honoria R C Sligo, Co Sligo
Absent Scanlon Pat 02 Mar 1872 39 Male Son of Honoria R C Sligo, Co Sligo
Absent Scanlon Martin 17 Sep 1873 38 Male Son of Honoria R C Sligo, Co Sligo
Absent Scanlon James 29 Nov 1875 35 Male Son R C Co Sligo Fireman

Absent Scanlon Honoria 15 Aug 1877 34 Female Daughter of Honoria R C St. John, Sligo
Absent Scanlon Joseph Michael 11 Mar 1879 32 Male Son of Honoria R C Finisklin, Sligo

as 1901 Scanlon Jane Frances 1883 28 Female Daughter Roman Catholic Sligo Co -

Absent Scanlon Margret 1886 25 Female Daughter R C Co Sligo Monitress

Absent Scanlon John 1889 22 Male Son R C Co Sligo

as 1901 Scanlon Robert 1892 19 Male Son R C Co Sligo

as 1901 Williams Norah 1896 15 Female Visitor Roman Catholic Sligo Co Scholars

Killoran Eugene 1883 28 Male Boarder Roman Catholic Sligo Co Sorter G P O

I still can't be certain that the 1901 John Scanlon is the one I am looking for although, as he was the only one with a father called martin and his children were called Mary, Martin, Margaret, Noreen and John (all names of his parents/siblings), it is looking promising.

Thanks again for your assistance, I've managed to make great strides as a result.

Best regards.

Paul Scanlon

Hi

Thanks for all the feedback, I am gradually trawling through a whole range of data sources and gathering a lot of data about Scanlons in general but finding it hard to nail down my specifc John Scanlon.

Does anyone know if the 1901 is complete i.e. covered every resident of Ireland as if this is the case then would suggest I have only 4 likely candidates.

Also, excuse my ignorance, but where did Betty/Clover find the Irish birth records and is there any mention of the parents names??

I ideally need to narrow down my search further by finding the birth of a John (Thomas) Scanlon around 1888 whose father was Martin (slightly unusual for Scanlons) but I don't seem to be able to track down any online records for this???

Any specific advice would be welcome.

Many thanks.

Hi Flick

Thanks for the tip, do you know if the 1901 census data is complete as I have only been able to find 5 possible matches for a John Scanlon (son of Martin) around the age of 14 as shown below:

Age 12: Head of family is Martin Scanlon ; Ballydoogan; Kilmacowen; Sligo
Age 12: Head of family is Bartly Scanlon (aged 60 - poss gf) ; Carrowreagh ; Toomour; Sligo
Age 13: Head of family is Bartly Scanlon (aged 60 - poss gf) ; Tully ; Templevanny ; Sligo
Age 14: Head of family is widow Margaret Mary Scanlon (born in Co Galway) ; Sunbury Gardens ; Rathmines & Rathgar East ; Dublin
Age 15: pupil at school in Castledawson Avenue, Blackrock, Dublin - originally from Co Sligo

Is there any way of obtaining any Irish data pre 1901 in relation to births, baptisms, marriages so I can try an narrow it down further??

Many thanks.

Hi

I am looking to track down ancestors and family for John Thomas Scanlon born in Ireland on or around 1887 but am struggling to find out where he came from in Ireland or any of his relations.

Information I have so far is:
- he married Mary Anne Hughes (from Westmeath in Ireland, father John a farmer) in Birmingham on 3rd November 1915
- according to his marriage certificate he was aged 27 (i.e. DOB 1887-88) and his father was Martin Scanlon who was a farmer
- the marriage cert was witnessed by Bridget Hughes (sister) and James Matthew Doherty.
- Death Certificate - shows died of TB on 22 June 1926 aged 40 in Birmingham (which would mean DOB 1885-86?) notified by James Doherty, Brother in Law.

Unfortunately I don't know where he came from in Ireland or the names of any other siblings although know he was a Roman Catholic.

He had 5 children named: (Mary - b1916); Martin (b1917); Margaret (b1919); Noreen (b1920) and John Thomas (b1922).

If anyone can help to track down any further information then would be very grateful.

Many thanks.

Paul Scanlon
