Im trying to trace the father of ; george wr purvis 1916

arnold purvis/johnson? info on death certificate,
john purvis 1921

joseph (laverick) purvis 1924

in 1909 there mother ANNIE burnell married william h purvis
but in 1916 i believe william died at war.
when her sons married a george purvis nr gates head where annie aka hanna lived, was listerd as the father on george and john's, arnold died , on joseph father is listed as jo laverick the a line is through it.
annie went on to marry a joseph laverick.

looking at some records annie lived very near this george purvis in fact i think i linked him to being mayby a cousin of william h purvis, please bare with me im quite slow (lot of medication) :-D

If there is no father's name on the birth cert then unless he's named on the baptism records, I'm afraid you'll never know.

HI LESLEY YES THATS HER ANNIE BURNELL HE DIED 1916 , ANNIE WENT ON TO HAVE 4 KIDS FROM 1916 AND NAMED THEM ALL PURVIS, IN THE 30.S I THINK IT WAS SHE MARRIED A GEORGE PURVIS NAMED ON THE KIDS WEDDING CERTIFCATE X

The children would be registered under the mother's name at the time which was Purvis ( married or not )

You'd need to see the parish registers at the local records office for baptisms.

I have seen it written " Supposed Father" the odd time or two.

IVE MADE A MISTAKE ALREADY ANNIE BURNELL MARRIED A JOSEPH LAVERICK IN 30S OR 40S, HER LAST SON WAS NAMED JOSEPH LAVERICK PURVIS , TRUST ME TO HAVE THIS PICKLE WOULD LOVE TO SOLVE IT THIS TIME ROUND SO GRATEFULL FOR HELP X

Assuming the mother bothered to have them baptised. It was an expensive process, and as she ensured the cart went before the horse, it would be fair to assume she didn't get them Baptised either.

You can call yourself whatever you like as long as it's not for fraudulent purposes. It would be very wrong to assume the father of any of the sibling's is the same father for your relative.

I myself have a rellie who listed her mother's husband as her father.... only when you scratch under the surface she was born 7 years after he died! None of the family had noticed this glaring mathematical error!!

Sometimes it's hard to avoid the fact there is a hole in your tree you just cannot solve!

Who is named as the father on Joseph Laverick Purvis's birth cert?

It was sometimes done that the middle name was the surname of the father whereby the parents were unmarried. That is very very common, it's a way of giving the child the father's identity without arousing too much suspicion about whom the father was.

Base born children were massively frowned upon even in the 1920's and 30's.

Your best clue for Joseph's father is his middle name. Is this your relative?

I think she is referring to the marriage certs, she did make reference to that at the beginning of the post.

Some people listed their grandfather as their father when marrying to avoid the stigma of having a blank space on the cert.

It's common for it all to be swept under the carpet and the new wife to have been spun a line about the father dying not long after the last child was born.

Nowt so strange as folk!
