It would probably be worth getting Aubrey's birth certificate which would give you his parents names including his mother's maiden name

Births Dec 1842 (>99%)
AUBREY Aubrey Crickhowell 26 288

the 1851 has his parents as William and Mary

this website seems to have them as David & Mary (living in Pennsylvania in 1881) though I may have interpreted it wrongly

That's right. Awbrey Awbrey.. Living in the Prince of Wales Inn. I believe he died there in 1898. Love the variation in spellingof the surname! Threw me for a while. W would give it the right sound in Welsh. 1811 sounds more feasible. I have his birth varying from 1802 to 1804. Are there certificates that far back ? I don't actually have any firm evidence that her surname was Harris though that marriage would seem to tie up with village and dates.

lancashireAnn Report 25 Jan 2012 22:42

the William who married Mary Harris does describe himself as a collier like the older William in 1841 rather than a miner on the parish record. Did your William have a son Aubrey Aubrey as shown in the 1851 census? (being the most uncommon name!)

The Mary shown on the 1851 census married to the older William was born in c1811 and would therefore have been abt 19 in 1831.

have you got a birth certificate for the son/daughter of your William which would show the mother's maiden name

Lanc' Ann... seems the right sort of date for their marriage but it would have made her only 15... I'm now re-researching her birth date ! I have it at 1816. Also, and I know their names are common, but it seems the son William also married a Mary Harris in Abergavenny 1859.

Thanks for all the input !! I wondered that Potty... possible, he seems to have spent the rest of his life as a publican. It's the older of the two that I think I'm interested in as I believe he is the husband of Mary Harris.. Seems odd having two people of same name and similar ages. Cousins is probably the answer.

Potty

Potty Report 25 Jan 2012 15:27

Maybe "Collier" indicated that he worked at the coal mine but not underground as a miner?

lancashireAnn Report 25 Jan 2012 13:56

which one are you trying to trace Kevin - the William age 30-34 in the 1841 census or the one age 35-39?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 25 Jan 2012 01:50

The second William Aubery on the 1841 Census is not actually living with the first one

There is a double black line between John age 10 months, and Willim

that indicates he is living in the house next door.

He apparently has a child Da Aubery living with him ...... I rpresume as you did, that Da (D with superscript "a') is a shortened version of David

Kevin

Collier and Miner mean the same occupation ........ one might have preferred one term and the other preferred the other

and that is what they would have told the enumerator.

They could be cousins

Have you tried to find the second William on later censuses??

Always, of course, remembering that ages of people over the age of 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 on the 1841 Census.

Some enumerators did not do that, but most did ............. the sign is that the age ends in 0 or 5.

Hi Ann, as the notes above suggest, about 1806. Something is making me think one of them might be a David... I think the father may have been a David.

WhiffingSiggs

WhiffingSiggs Report 24 Jan 2012 21:09

That's the one, thank you. You think it's Wm, maybe for William and definitely a miner? Seems odd, i was thinking they were brothers but not with the same name !

when was William born?

WhiffingSiggs

WhiffingSiggs Report 24 Jan 2012 20:48

I'm looking at an image from the 1841 census and having trouble deciphering part of it. Anyone like to have a look ?!?
There are 6 people listed for the 'Miners Arms, Llanelly'. Last on the list is William Aubrey 35 Collier. First on the list is **** Aubrey 30. Can't make out first name (probably an abbreviation) or occupation. I'm thinking miner...But would one be listed as a miner and one as a collier ?!?
