Thank you everybody for all the info.
Guess this is a mystery I may never find the answer too unless I can find the correct marriage record for Emma and William, to confirm her fathers name.
The only concrete details I have are that my g-grandfathers was born in 1888 in Horninglow, Staffordshire to William and Emma Bridges nee Barton. I have now received a copy death cert for Emma. If it is correct she died in 1922 but unfortunately her birth date and birth place is not included. I believe this were included from 1969.
Again many thanks to all who replied. I will continue to look and hopefully get to the bottom of this mystery

Hi, thanks for all the info.
Emma's father is shown as an agricultural labourer on her birth cert, hardly a farmer unless he suddenly went up in the world.
Thomas born 1888 was my g grandfather so I am absolutely sure of his parentage. Emma nee Barton and William. Several more children were born apart from the missing George, twins Alice and Emma in 1902, Agnes 1903 and Caroline 1905 all in Stretton, Staffordshire. George was born in Horninglow, Staffordshire in Dec 1881 possibly around the time of Emma and Williams marriage. If I could find their mariage record I could at least confirm Emma's father as John Barton as the cert I have is purely guesswork and she may indeed have been born in Hampshire.
I am now left wondering if I have the right birth cert and her mother was indeed Rebecca.

This is a possible 1841, but you now really need that 1859 marriage cert:
BURTON, James M 25 1816 < ag lab BURTON, Sarah F 20 1821 Derbyshire BURTON, Rebecca F 1 1840 Derbyshire BLOOD, Emma F 20 1821 Derbyshire -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Registration District: Ashby de la Zouch Civil Parish: Ticknall
Address: Ticknall, Ticknall County: Derbyshire
James born out of county, the rest in.

Susan - does the occupation for John (a farmer) on the census match up with the certificate?

Hi
Many Thanks for all your replies.
Mike is probably right and that the family moved which is why Emma must have been confused about her birth place.
Only one more problem - Copy birth cert I got for Emma born in Burnaston in December 1861 shows her mother as Hannah and not Rebecca. Could this be a variation of her name. May be a middle name !
Has anybody got any details of her mothers birth so I can check it out.
Thanks Susan

I think that's the answer to how the confusion has arisen, Mike!

Susan, that is quite possible!
Especially if it's a large family they may have lost track a bit. Other thing is that if they weren't very literate they wouldn't be checking info on birth certificates (if the births were actually registered).

Hi
Yes, that the correct family. Again in 1901 the census shows Emma was born in Ealing. I am beginning to wonder if her parents moved and she really didn't know where she was born !!

Hi, I am looking for some information about Emma Barton, she was married to William Bridges about 1881. I can't confirm Emma's birth place or parentage. I believe she was born about 1861 in either Romsey / Eling Hampshire or Burnaston, Derbyshire.
In 1881 she was living at Hoon Hay and working as a servant, at the same address was her husband to be William Bridges, her birth place is recorded as Burnaston. The 1891 census shows a birth place of Romsey but in 1911 its again shown as Burnaston. (I can't trace the 1901 census) I feel that the Burnaston address is most probably correct but I cant be sure.( I did consider that perhaps William had remarried to another Emma but the 1911 census shows their marriage as lasting 30 years so ruled this out)
I have been unable to find a marriage record for Emma and William so can't confirm her fathers details but I do have a possible birth cert for Emma Burton born in Burnaston in 1861 to Hannah Barton nee BURTON and John Barton.
Have hit a "brickwall" in finding anything else. Can anybody help with any marriage or birth records or do you have this family in your tree?
Many Thanks Susan
