More information now at hand!
Charles Mayhew to Mary Norris marriage certificate gives his father's name as William and occupation (I think as Butler).
Birth certificate March 1841 (sub-district of Tottenham) has William Mayhew as father, occupation is valet.
Mother Elizabeth (formerly Spire, Shire, Spice??). Possibly gives her age as 24.
I am still unable to find Charles Mayhew or his parents William and Elizabeth on the 1841 or 1851 census records, Perhaps if he was in service as a valet/Butler he could have travelled with his employers abroad?? Clutching at straws now!!
Any ideas folks??

Hi Ozi
Yes I am pretty sure that I am trying to locate the early years and parents of the Charles registered in St Pancras as that appears to always be listed as where he was born in the later census records.
As the other one was registered only a few miles away it was worth looking into just to rule out any possibility that he was the Charles Mayhew I was tracing. At the moment I still have not found him with his parents in 1841 or 1851 but hopefully the birth certificate and marriage certificate can give me some help with parents names.
Thanks for posting :-)

Having looked a bit more at the Charles Mayhew born 1841, St Ann Westminster/Soho he appears to be in the same area in 1861 and 1871, a tinplate worker and married to Elizabeth. This is probably the son of Sarah from Farnham.
I did find Sarah Tyler on the 1861 census and three of her children were with her but their name was transcribes as Mayhan.
Thanks to all, I'm logging off for a bit now so won't be around to reply.

Thanks T (Tracey?)
I wasn't ignoring your posts just trying to work out if i could trace Sarah Mayhew and her family further.
By 1881 she appears to be Sarah Tyler(Widow) born Farnham living with her son George born 1842 in Soho.
I'm just trying to work out when she married a Tyler though!
Still working on it but thanks for the help and suggestions.
Keeps me out of the wife's hair anyway ;-)

Thanks Jan, Dea, Chris
The 1964 Marriage info was what I had in mind already and now confirmed in part by the 1861 census.
The 1841 census from Chris I now have researched a bit more and feel is probably not the one. Sarah is still in Clerkenwell in 1851 (widowed) and with Joseph(15), Mary(8) and Emma(5). Searching BMD between 1838 and 1851shows births in Clerkenwell of Jane (from the 1841 census), Robert (b1839), Mary Ann (b1841), Emma(1843) and Robert James(1846). Searching deaths show that a Robert died in 1840, Robert James 1846 and Joseph (the husband/father in 1849).
Mary Ann was presumably the 3 month old child in 1841and of couse I believe I am looking for a Charles with a birth registered earlier the same year.
But thanks for the suggestion Chris! :-)
If anyone else is reading this and has any clever ways of searching census records for 1841 or 1851 i would still be interested in finding Charles Mayhew born 1841 St. Pancras, Middlesex.
I will also add Charles and Mary Norris' marriage cert to my next GRO order.
Thanks,
Martyn

Just throwing this one from the 1851 census into the mix - the Strand is vaguely the right area, mum Sarah is a widow, the family need an income if he is going to be a teacher (mum is running a coffee house), and the mother is from Farnham in Surrey, which is on the Hampshire border, so perhaps there was a family connection to get him from Shoreditch to Hampshire - but this is pure conjecture and the 1864 marriage certificate is definitely needed...

Naughty Jan !! - How dare you suggest deleting useful info !!! :-D
I thought the marriage was in Hampshire?
I will gladly look up a London marriage if you tell me which one I am looking for.
Martyn - It is always a 'no no' to delete info once it has been found, especially if you would like more info on the same people.;-)
Just add on to here what you would like next - that way we have all the info together and don't have to go re-finding it.

Crossed posts there. What you now need is a marriage lookup for his father's name. I think this should be available on Ancestry Parish records, but I don't have full membership - hopefully someone else will be able to access this. Jan
