Good evening all

I am trying to sort out the family of Thomas Ball b. 1835 in Coventry.

His parents, according to an extracted record on familysearch, were John and Catherine (Taylor) Ball married at St. Martin's, Birmingham, 22nd August 1819. John Ball could possibly have been born in Coventry on 13th August 1798, son of William and Elizabeth Ball.
I have found two siblings for Thomas: William b. 1832 and James b. 1834 but no other children to fill the gap between 1819 and 1832.

I am totally unable to find any of the family on the 1841 census, can some kind person help, please?

Thanks a lot
Beverley

I saw that one, thank you both.
No wife or siblings! And also this John Ball couldn't possiby be the one who got married in 1819.
I wonder if the marriage of John Ball and Catherine Taylor is the right one. :-S

Flick Report 1 Mar 2012 22:51

No mention of 'Taylor' on the baptism record, not surprising as the MMN wouldn't be considered important

THOMAS BALL Christening: 24 APR 1835 Saint Michael, Coventry, Warwick, England

Father: JOHN BALL Mother: CATHERINE

The leap from 1819 to 1835 is not feasible...........and the location difference is a factor

How about this one?

JOHN BALL

That looks a lot more likely, Flick.
I searched for another Ball - Catherine marriage without success.
Don't suppose there is a father's name there?
The John Ball born in 1811 was the son of William and Maria (Mary?).

Thanks for that one, alviegal.
If Catherine died too it must've been pre-1837, I can't see a record on freebmd.

Many thanks for all assistance so far, I am off for the night now but will check in in the morning.

I C&P'd the IGI info

To find his parents, you'll need to look for a baptism....on the IGI

alviegal Report 1 Mar 2012 23:16

No I can't see a death for Catherine or William. Where did you get his name from, by the way? Possibly both deaths before 1837, if, in fact, they did die.

Here's William (from familysearch too):

William Ball

England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

christening: 20 Feb 1832 St. Michael,? Coventry,? Warwick,? England
residence: Coventry,? Warwick,? England

parents: John Ball,? Catherine Ball

Hmmm the John Ball born in 1811 was a Catholic:

Joannes Ball
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening: 26 May 1811 Francisan Mission,? Birmingham,? Warwickshire,? England
residence: Gloucester,? England
parents: Gulilelmi Ball,? Mariæ

Many thanks for the help so far!

I could just do with a pair of keen eyes to help a bit more with this one.

I think I have found Thomas on the 1851 census aged 16.
Reference H.O.107/2059, Birmingham All Saints.
It looks like he is a PRISONER but I'm not quite sure; there is a Patrick lower down on the page and the capital P doesn't really look the same. Also there seem to be a LOT of people on the page marked as blind/deaf/dumb.
I can't find him on the Warwickshire database of prisoners but on the other hand the database isn't complete.
Can someone kindly check and see what institution Thomas is in?

Thanks again
Beverley

Had a look.
It´s definitely the Borough Gaol, which is now Winson Green prison, although until quite recently, All Saints was the psychiatric hospital, known earlier as the lunatic asylum. Maybe the building was used for both until the prison opened.
Can´t read the occupation. looks like chip filler, but I´m sure it isn´t.

BeverleyW Report 3 Mar 2012 16:09

Thanks, wisechild.

I thought it said Chip Filler too :)

I think Winson Green was opened in the late 1840's so maybe in the early years it was dual purpose!
I wonder what Thomas had been up to, only 16 years old. :-S

Thanks again

According to the Criminal registers on Ancestry, Thomas Ball was tried 18.10.1850 & sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for larceny.
