please can anyone help with explaining the written work on the divorce section on find my past.. Hugh W Bradford born1837 and amelia born 1837 she was born in stoke on trent and hugh in staffordshire in the 1881 census hes staying in a hotel and amelia is a boarder with her daughter elizabeth (1871) in stafford . I clicked on divorce on FMP but I dont understand the results they say there are 2 results for Bradford in 1880 which would fit but I dont understand the format help please, regards chris

Hi Gins its just that his wife and youngest daughter are away from there own home in the 1881 census expect my imagination is running away with me.I have Hugh Meller Bradford death in Weymouth Dorset Dec Q 1886 yet your death for Hugh is in Radnorshire Wales, My ref for the death is GRO ref 5A 195 its such an unusual name but they cant be the same person? dates match though, I know he did live in Wales in the 1861 thanks agian

The will was proven in Llandrindod Wells, Radnor, died at 13 Royal Cres, Weymouth

thanks im learning all he time thanks to all the helpers out there\. \i cant find Amelia in the 1891 census ive found a amelia bradford a widow born abt 1834 buts she a char women woldnt think she do that after being left that money in the will she living in surrey and the place of birth doesnt match either,The only death i can find for Amelia is in 1908 aged 69 June Q Reg.district Godstone Surrey Ive been on this couple for hours any chance you could help me, thanks chris

I don't think the above death is yours - I have found an Amelia Bradford aged 68 in 1911, living Birmingham.

Hi Brummiejan, the 2 deaths you found make Amelia born in 1843 in both cases, could there be so much age difference as im sure she was born 1837 thank you for helping,chris

Just adding a comment about the layout of the divorce records -

the divorce would be carried out through the courts, by one spouse calling a case against the other spouse, often on the grounds of adultery, and therefore joining the other party into the case. So for instance, if Mr Kramer wanted to sue for divorce against Mrs Kramer on the grounds of adultery with Mr Smith, then his name would appear first, and then hers with that of the co-respondent: Kramer v Kramer & Smith.

One point I have just realised is that since cases with the same appellant initial are all listed on the same page, the clerks would often abbreviate the spouse's surname - i.e. one might see Brown v B & Smith, or Jones vs J & Black.

In the case of the two listings for Bradford in 1880, both concern the same divorce (case 6734, Mr and Mrs Jenkinson) and co-respondent's surname is Bradford.

Hi Gins, I don't think Christine is thinking along divorce lines now. When I looked at the thread, it was all sewn up, except that Chris had said that she found the listings on FMP re divorce a bit obscure. Since I found these tricky when looking up the Boteler divorce on another thread, I thought I would add my thoughts on the layout of the divorce generally - and not to suggest that Christine's Hugh Bradford was involved -sorry for creating confusion.....
