Could anyone tell me if their is a site for the 1871 Irish census, a free one would be great

Jonesey Report 11 Apr 2012 10:49

Most Irish census records pre 1901 were unfortunately destroyed.

Full government censuses were taken of the whole island in 1821, 1831, 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 1901, and 1911. The first four, for 1821, 1831, 1841, and 1851, were largely destroyed in 1922, in the fire at the Public Record Office; surviving fragments are detailed under the county source-lists. Those for 1861 1871 1881 and 1891 were completely destroyed earlier, by order of the government.

Thank you worth a try

What about marriage /birth records

I have a family living in Scotland 1881 but the parents were born & married in Ireland and most of their children were born there But I don't know which part ???

Irish BMD certificates are available see:

http://www.groireland.ie/about_us.htm

Without knowing the probable location of events however it could be a long and possibly expensive search.

I personally have found that particularly in the 1911 census some people of Irish descent included more precise details of where they were born. This I have assumed to be because the 1911 UK census was the first census that the head of household completed rather than an enumerator. It might be worth checking if those on the 1881 census were still around in 1911.

Do you want to give us some names and we may be able to help please?

When was the son born in Scotland? If he was born after 1855 then his birth registration will give the date and place of his parents marriage.

Hi

I haven't got his birth just his Marriage in 1904

Robert McMeechan married Cecilia Ainslie a widow (McAlpine was her maiden name my ancestor)
On the Marriage certificate it has his parents as Hugh McMeechan a coal miner deceased and moother Eliza Baird I've looked for a birth with these names on but nothing with both names on he was born in Ayr
Found him in 1881/91 living with his grandfather Hugh McMeechan born Ireland 1837.
so I'm thinking Hugh had a son Hugh born Ireland who in turn had Robert born Ayr but can't prove it??/ Can't even find a death certificate for Hugh Junior in Scotland

Yes That is the Family Robert being the grandson of Hugh

I see what you mean but she would only be 14 if she was Roberts mother

I did find a birth for Robert M........... 1879 Ayr as it's the only one it should be the right one

But she is down as Daughter in 1891 and in 1881 she is living with Grandparents Adam Cammock 62

their seem to be so many names linked to this family??

Yes That seems to be the birth I thought haven't gone into it

And the death 1905 possibly is possibly the grandfather

I think I'm going to have to get more certificates to go any further with this

It get quite costly with Scotlandspeople

Thank you for helping

Not sure I'm following this now

on Robert's marriage in1904 it had father Hugh a coal miner mother Eliza Baird

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 11 Apr 2012 13:27

Just looked at his birth on SP. Robert Tweed was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Mcmichen, Domestic servant. So he was the GRANDSON of Hugh b. 1837 Ireland. As he has TWeed as a middle name it may be that his father's surname was Tweed but there is no father named on the birth certificate. His grandfather Hugh was probably the only "father" that he knew and rather than show that he was illegitimate named him as his father on his marriage certificate. The Elizabeth Baird on his marriage certificate may actually be his mother who had married a Mr. Baird after Robert's birth.

Thank you For that I did wonder that at the beginning I even thought Hugh was married to Elizabeth ?? big age difference but in those days

Problem Solved I've been in touch with some who seems to have the 1905 death of Hugh so I'll wait and see if he gats back to me before I go into the death as this is sideways in my tree

Thank you
