Ah, that makes sens of the Germanic-sounding surname doesn't it - it's all coming together! :-)

Linda Report 7 May 2012 11:56

Thanks both. If I ever go to Newfoundland I'll certainly go and look at the old cable station - but as I live in South Wales, UK, it's not likely to be anytime soon! I've been to Porthcurno in Cornwall where the South American cables ran from - they have a museum and had some records of my grandfather who was on various cable ships.

And I usually do check threads frequently, but been a bit distracted by arrival of new grandson on the other side of England! :-) :-) :-)

After WW1, Italy acquired the Austrian province of the Austrian Tyrol, moving the border N 100km to the Bremner p ass - Bolzano is in the middle of this chunk. Italy also got Istria just N of Trieste, but Yugoslavia grabbed that back after WW2.

You're welcome.
I just noticed "uncle" Robt's pob=Newfoundland (I think - it's hard to make out).

Newfoundland was a separate country until 1949, when it joined the rest of Canada - so that's why he would have a date of immigration., The first transatlantic telegraph cable went to Newfoundland, specifically Hearts Content on Trinity Bay. The original cable station's now a historical site, and full of the old equipment - the cable runs under the road, and if you cross over and stand on the beach, you can see the frayed ends vanishing under the road - you should drop in next time you drive by.

PS - when I come to these boards, usually first and last things I do is click on the "My threads" link in left margin, a few cm down from top. This has the time and boardname of the last post anyone has made to a thread I've posted on.

That's brilliant - very many thanks. Sorry I didn't pick this up sooner. That will all be most useful - I'm getting really interested in this family's telegraphy connections. :-)
