This Cumberland surname is of Norse-Viking origin, and derives from the pre 9th Century Scandinavian "Fjall", describing one who lives on a mountain. The name can also be locational from one of the various Northern villages such as Fell, Fellside and Fellgate. There is also a possibility that in a few cases the name can be a metonymic for a Fellmonger, a dealer in skins. What is certain is that no less than eight Coats of Arms ave been granted to the Fells, and that of the nine notable namebearers recorded in the "National Biography", eight were Christian divines! There are also many Fell's throughout the UK - these very likely dropped the "e" off the end

earliest Felle that i can find is a Alv Felle born around 1490, address, Felle, Treungen, Telemark County, Norway. So if they did originate in Norway they may have come over in the Norman invasion of Ireland, other site says though that it is from Holland.If you google www.find a grave.com there are a lot of Felle graves from Noeway on it.

I have been researching my family from Woodford, South East Galway, Ireland. I have managed to trace back to John Felle 1809-1872. I recently discovered information which offered a theory that the Felle family along with other families originally came from the Forest of Dean or South Wales to work in the Ironworks in Woodford. This would have been in the 17th Century when a Cromwellian supporter obtained lands in Ireland.

I have undertaken some research about this but nothing offers any specific information to the movement of workers from the UK to this part of Ireland.

Any help appreciated.
